Will the achievements be retroactive?
They sure are.

In addition to the above, we're delighted to tell you about something very cool the Steam C++ Client has allowed us to do. From tomorrow onwards Steam players will find UI Scaling in the game settings!
That's not a small thing! Probably the main reasons I use runelite is because the UI scaling and camera settings on the vanilla client make it impossible to play in resizable, this helps a ton
It isn't a small thing at all! It is new though, so we'd love to get feedback on issues or bugs.

Since these are clearly meant for low-lvl players and guide them around in F2P, there should be an achievement for teleporting with the Chronicle. Defnitely think this item is something new players should be aware of, no reqs to buy and it's very useful early on before getting magic lvls.
That's a great suggestion. I'll pass that on.

Why would anyone use the steam client over Runelite? What features other than UI scaling does the steam client have to prevent people ditching it for Runelite?
You still keep your playerbase though, they will just be playing on different clients so I guess it's no loss for you.
It's a really good question.
Bottom line is that we're really excited to bring Steam to new players or players who played a long time ago. We understand that a lot of our current players might not want to play using the Steam game client - and that's fine!
We've seen everybody's feedback though, loud and clear. Our current focus is on a smooth Steam launch for the time being. For the future, we're not ruling anything out but there are no immediate plans. Naturally, we'll tell you well ahead of time if that changes!

Read moreu/JagexSarnie, any ideas when we can expect an updated blog on the status of the equipment rebalancing changes?
We're still discussing our approach. No ETA on updated blog, but we want to let you know what's going on sooner rather than later.

No steam backgrounds?
Pretty sure we've got some Graador, Zuk, and Zulrah backgrounds lined up. I will check!

Will getting the steam achievements be tracked in something like the collection log?
They won't be trackable in game. And I'd hate to add them to the Collection Log - it'd force players to play using Steam if they're collectionists.
EDIT - Personal opinion warning re: Collection Log. :D

The Steam release will be huge for those dealing with the current login issues! It's not a complete solution to the problem, but it's at least a decent workaround until they've revamped the login systems. Well done!
Yep! And rest assured - a proper solution to the problem is coming!
We used the Steam Beta (launched in December) to help out players who reported the Login Issue, and it seemed to work well.

Will the c++ client be available to people who don’t want to use steam?
Our current focus is entirely on the Steam launch and the Stream client, but it makes sense that we'd distribute the client outside of Steam. Nothing concrete, no immediate plans, but we'll update everybody the second that changes.

With the new steam client, does that make improving the default client more likely/easier (less spaghetti) in the future? Basically ditching default and making the new C++ client the new default?
Also, is the steam client realistically the only fix we'll see for the too many log in exploit? Or is that fix separate and still close to fruition?
The cynic in me says as a company thats what you'll use as the fix.

Nope! A long-term proper fix is in progress, and has been for some time. Steam will be useful in the short-term.

Hopefully the steam achievements expand overtime that increases the difficulty, Reach 2277 would be a nifty achievement :)
200m all?
