Hey there!

We mentioned in the August State of Development blog that we’ve been working towards adding sub-region matchmaking. We’ve recently enabled this feature for the Southeast Asian region. Follow the link above for all the technical details in the Networking section and read more below for additional information.
What’s sub-region matchmaking?
This is a new feature we’ve implemented that will find the data-centers that are available in your region, determine which one provides you the healthiest connection, then place you in a queue that is pinged to that location to give you the best available connection. Depending on your location, players will experience varying improvements to their ping and other network related performance.
When will this feature be implemented?
As of September 10, we have launched the Singapore data-center and implemented the logic that allows for sub-region matchmaking. While Asia will be the first region to receive this, we plan on enabling this matchmak... Read more

What’s up Fortnite community,

With Season 6 right around the corner, competition is about to heat up! Details about the Fall Skirmish below.

Beginning in October, we’re opening up inclusive competition, where everybody can play and compete. To make that possible we’ve had to harden and scale our systems and infrastructure. For example, August was Fortnite’s biggest month yet, with 78.3 million of you showing up to play. This exposed weak points and allowed us to make targeted improvements to critical systems, such as stats and servers. The Summer Skirmish also, as you all probably noticed, highlighted problems with performance and spectating, which we’ve been working on ever since. We’re excited about kicking off the new competition system and we’ll have details dropping in the weeks ahead.

On to the Fall Skirmish! In our previous blog we mentioned the Fall Skirmish will include a variety of play formats each week. All Skirmish long we’ll be iterating on broadcast tools, new weekl...

Heya folks,
We’re kicking off our Fall Skirmish next weekend awarding $10,000,000 in prize money across a 6-week series concluding at Twitchcon, October 26-28.
The new approach for Fall Skirmish will include both Competitive and Entertainment play formats. We’re looking to incorporate some of these new formats into our large-scale events in 2019. During Fall Skirmish, players will proudly represent themed teams and earn points based on their performances in both play formats. Each week will pose new challenges like white-knuckle ATK races, masterful golf outings, mini-games, and of course high skill competition every weekend.
Nearly 500 Fortnite community members earned cash prizes during the Summer Skirmish and we can’t wait to grow that number during Fall Skirmish. Keep an eye out for a follow-up blog next week for our week 1 format and team announcements. When we’re closer to TwitchCon we’ll drop all the details on the finale’s competitive format, as well as a way to pre-register o... Read more
Heya folks,
We’ve heard your feedback on Audio and have some updates! Tactical audio cues are incredibly important to the core gameplay, and our goal is for you to be able to consistently rely on audio information to survive. Here are some things we’re starting to develop and test internally:

Season 6 - v6.00
  • Footstep sounds
    • More contrast between above/below steps.
      • We want this to be easier to determine on the fly, especially while other sounds are playing (gunfire, harvesting, etc).
    • More high frequency audio content to improve your ability to pinpoint the location of steps, and to prevent them from getting drowned out during intense combat.
  • Glider audio tells
    • Increased awareness when an enemy is gliding in your vicinity.
      • Doppler-based glider audio for incoming threats. This will create that “car passing by” effect when a player glides over top of you.
      • Improved spatialization of both skydiving and gliding players.
      • Ability to hear the open/clos...

Hey Fortnite friends,

Since our last State of Dev we’ve been heads down on learning from our recent updates, working on major changes to prepare for free to play, and continuing to add to Save the World. We released the first part of the Canny Valley quest line, added new enemies and celebrated our first birthday! Let’s get started.

No Free to Play in 2018

We decided to move the free-to-play launch of Save the World out of this year. We’re working on a broad set of features, reworks, and backend system scaling we believe are needed to go free-to-play. Save the World has grown consistently since our launch in July 2017 and Fortnite overall has experienced unprecedented growth. Scaling up for the legions of player heroes who will be joining the fight is key to providing an excellent experience. This applies to all of our players, old and new, so we’re taking the time to get this right.

To thank our founders, both new and old, if you log in and play during the Fortnitemares Event,...

Happy Haunting Fortnite Fans,

Fortnitemares 2018 is here, featuring all manner of haunting happenings across Fortnite. Skulk in the shadows to scare your way to a Victory Royale or brave hair-raising husks to complete the weekly new missions. Darkness has risen.

Battle Royale

During Fortnitemares, you’ll face off against Cube Monsters in a whole new way of playing Battle Royale. There are new weapons to fight back against these creepy creatures, like the Six Shooter and Fiend Hunter Crossbow. Take out the Cube Fiends and Fragments to pick up loot, and survive against enemy players.

Make sure you’re lookin’ good while the darkness descends and pick up the new Deadfire Outfit. This new type of reactive outfit features in-match progression, giving you a way to show off your skills in style. The outfit will progress through 2 styles based on the damage you deal enemies (players and AI) and how long you last in a match.  Deadfire also comes with the Shackled Stone Back Bling and ...

Heya folks,

Earlier this year we launched on iOS and more recently opened up Android to everyone. We have many important features and updates in development that we’re excited to share with you. Get the scoop on our ongoing dev efforts!
CUSTOMIZABLE HUD
We want you to have more control over your HUD, and an important step in that direction is to allow players to decide which elements are active or disabled at any given moment. We've added editable visibility settings for most HUD elements as well as grid snapping. Every HUD element has three states for the three modes of gameplay (building, editing and combat).
CONTROLS
We’re doing a big quality of life pass on many of the HUD elements. Small things that can dramatically impact the usefulness of the UI, like building slots being drag and droppable which could block other inputs or the wood resource button disabling autorun. We brought back building from the quickbar buttons, which we previously disabled due to it blocking some of our ... Read more

Hey Fortnite Friends,
We mentioned in our latest State of Development that we had some Front End improvements on the way. We’re excited to announce that these changes will be coming in the 6.30 update. Let’s hop in!

Homebase

When we approached updating the front end, we set out with a lot of goals: we wanted the UI to be easier to understand and navigate, while also leaving room to grow in the future. Additionally, we wanted the front end to feel integrated with the rest of the game by giving it more life and character. In the revamp, many of the menu options now represent locations within your “Homebase” and are staffed by characters you meet as part of the campaign.

The Command Center

The new Command tab acts as an overview of your account progress and prominently features your current hero. The screen acts as a hub and provides a variety of options that become available as you progress through the campaign, offering quick access to change your hero, view your stats, and manage a... Heya folks,
Two weeks ago we began our Glider Re-deploy test in default modes. We did not live up to expectations of quickly iterating on the mechanic and communicating plans.
We are disabling Glider Re-Deploy in all default modes starting in v6.30.
It will remain in the larger team modes (e.g. Soaring 50s, Disco Domination etc.) and Playground to allow ongoing experimentation with this feature.
We really appreciate all of the engaged discussion and encourage you to keep the feedback coming! Read more

Heya folks,

In our previous blog about Account Linking we stated:
“In November, we’re going to release an “account merging” system so you can combine multiple console-linked accounts to transfer Battle Royale cosmetic item purchases, lifetime wins, V-Bucks, and Save the World campaign access.”
Due to some ongoing technical concerns, we will be delaying the Account Merge feature until early next year. We want to make sure that this process is thoroughly tested and working properly before releasing it to those of you currently looking to transfer purchases from other accounts to your primary account. We’ll be sure to update you as we get closer to the release of the feature, which will include a web page on launch to help guide you through the flow!
Thank you for all of your patience while we continue to work on completing this tool. Read more
