Hi, tacking onto this to get some assistance.

I've recently come across vanguard error 185, which doesn't let me access certain things online. For example, while I can access the shop in the client and start a game, I can't see match history. Other things I can't access include:

old.reddit (but I can access new.reddit)

escape from tarkov servers (my game gets stuck at "loading profile data" screen)

I also had a blue screen crash during a tft game. I have tried several restarts, but the problem persists on both my normal network and my hotspot

Could you try exiting Vanguard (right click Vanguard in the system tray and select Exit Vanguard) and then trying Ctrl+R on old.reddit to do a hard refresh and see if it still fails to load? Just on reading this, it sounds more like you're having an internet issue that caused the 185, but due to how it looked on your machine it feels like it was the 185 that caused the internet issue. Vanguard can't impact things like website access and wouldn't be doing any actions when you play other games. This would help confirm that Vanguard wasn't causing those hiccups.

Hello

Did you guys apply a micropatch since yesterday? I was able to play normally but now i can't get in cause "We couldn't install a required dependency"

We did release an update about 2.5 hours ago. You may still have a game open somewhere in the background (when u alt-f4 val it doesnt always close val for example). Rebooting your PC ought to make sure everything's right.

If you're still having the issue, try uninstalling via the Control Panel (not from the System Tray), then launch the game and install again that way.

I'd love to know if the initial reboot solves for you or not, if you're willing to come back and let me know. Hope this fixes for you.

Javonetor

Rebooting didn't work (tried 3 times in like a 2 hour period)

I uninstalled Vanguard and reinstalled and that did work, thanks!

So glad to hear it. GLHF!

Myself and 2 of my best friends IRL have uninstalled LoL after 10 years of playing together daily.

Vanguard isn't helping riot. It's spyware. Gotta say, my mental health has never been better after a week of no league, so c ya.

I'm not sure what to say about the spyware thing other than "well...it's not" but as a gamedev, I'm sad to hear it. As a fellow human though, I'm happy to hear your mental health is improving. Wishing you and your friends all the best and that you can find another game to play while you hang out together. My 2 friends from back home and I are really into Helldivers 2 right now - you might give that one a shot if you're more comfortable with their kernel level anticheat. Super fun game!

Vanguard desperately digging up dirt on OP but coming up empty handed

haha SOMEBODY STOP THEM

Amazing play! I would be so dang frustrated. SO SLIPPERY.

So u mean to tell me i can play league of legends with my secure boot off ? ( this is great news for me because i've played League since end of 2014, im pretty connected to esports scene )

It says it passed all the checks...

u/edit and i checked TPM2.0 its on

Correct. Vanguard on League does not require Secure Boot. You will be able to play League with SB turned off.

MakaroneSendwicis

So that means u can play league without secure boot enabled ?

League + Vanguard does not require Secure Boot. VALORANT does, but League doesn't need it, so we don't require it.

TPM2.0 does need to be enabled though if you're running Windows 11.

kirigerKairen

Well, you can currently, but you won't be able to in the future when Vanguard is actually enabled. The modal here just doesn't check for Secure Boot.

League won't require Secure Boot when Vanguard is enabled. That's why the modal doesn't check for it. :)

It's required on VAL but they're solving different problems for us, and Secure Boot is less critical to the problems we see Vanguard solving for League, so we don't require it.

TPM2.0 will need to be enabled though if you're running Windows 11.

Will this cause any problems with something like Corsair iCue or Razer Synapse? I have a Razer mouse with buttons and I bound my attack move and control keys to buttons on there instead of pressing it on my keyboard. I’ve seen posts of some Valorant players saying they got banned from these programs when it has nothing to do with cheating and it’s just rerouting keybinds, and then Riot support does nothing to help them and tells them, “Yeah, you were cheating, we’re right and you’re wrong, good day.”

Input from tools like this are sometimes blocked, but it's unlikely this was the only thing on someone's box if they were flagged as cheating. They're not currently something we ban for.

this is my real problem

I see. Could you grab your Vanguard logs (C:\Program Files\Riot Vanguard\Logs) and send me a direct message with them?

So how do you disable Vanguard when you boot up your computer for non-League purposes? Is there an option to easily do it now?

Yeah you can just right click it in your system tray and select Exit Vanguard. It'll warn you that if you want to play a game that requires Vanguard you'll have to restart your PC - you just click "Ok" on that prompt and it's off.

Q: What if I'm having technical issues with Vanguard?

These days, Vanguard suffers from a lot of attribution bias, and the majority of bugs we see actually come from external sources that are difficult to lock down. One of the largest perpetrators recently has been the distribution of pirated software that toggles a registry option ("DevOverrideEnable") and allows "different" versions of key Windows files to be loaded into all running processes. Now, we can't say exactly what your intentions would be for doing something like this (wink), but what we can say is that Vanguard doesn't like when corrupted windows files are loaded into VALORANT—we use a great many of them to do tampering checks ourselves. We'd also recommend that you be careful what you turn off windows defender for, because it's doing what it says on the tin (defending windows).

Anyways, issues can arise, but please submit a ticket. We'll get you sorted.

I might have downloaded software for one of my classes, and from my understanding as it was a license type of program it change something from the windows key

am i fucked?

There'll be a modal going out in 14.8 (currently on PBE fwiw) that will check your PC to let you know if it's ready for Vanguard. If you get an alert that something isn't right, there's troubleshooting steps and a player support link that can help you get things set up in time for launch, which is currently planned for 14.9.

Even if I used PC for non Vanguard things, wouldn’t it still boot aslong as those applications and hooks are closed and not running? Or would I still need to restart etc

Yeah the article says it better than I would, so I'll just quote the bit that speaks directly to this.

Why is it always on?

Vanguard is not really "running all the time." The driver loads at boot, but nothing is making calls to it, and there's no network connectivity until you run one of Riot's games. It's literally just sitting there (menacingly), so that it can attest to the fact that nothing's happened between Windows loading and the game starting that would break the operating system.

When you launch League, the Vanguard client contacts the driver to confirm that it thinks everything is 100%, and if so, you receive a valid anti-cheat session and may connect to the game server. Instructions from the client then start enabling features within the driver to watch for things that might tamper with the signed League process and prevent them. You can always disable the driver whenever you'd like-you'll just need a fresh reboot to "recertify" the integrity of the trust chain before ...

So, if I already have Vanguard because I also play VALORANT, am I going to have to do another install of Vanguard for LoL? Or is the Vanguard endpoint the same for both VALORANT and LoL?

Nah, if you have it for VAL you have it for League. :)

Crnogoraac

You should focus on premades of scripters, scripter gets banned sooner or later, but their premades end up high above their real elo and its nightmare to have them in team.

There're some mechanisms in place that will punish people who are obviously boosting their account by grouping with someone Vanguard identifies as cheating :)

ballsofgraphene

Will this also apply to tft?

Vanguard runs at the League Client level, so PC TFT will be Vanguarded.

Mobile TFT doesn't require Vanguard.

AngrySilva

What will happen, if anything to chat punishments? Any changes?

Vanguard isn't concerned about chat stuff. Any changes to how chat punishments work would be another team.

Just so I understand, correct me if I'm wrong on either of the scenarios:

1) I need to use PC for personal non-League stuff: I start up my PC. Vanguard automatically boots up. I go to my system tray and exit Vanguard. That means Vanguard is completely turned off and none of my activity will be monitored?

2) I want to play League after doing non-League stuff and exiting Vanguard from system tray: But I need to restart PC manually OR i need to actually try to access League client, which will then prompt me to restart PC?

If my understanding is correct, then I have no issues with Vanguard being mandatory going forward.

Sorry if this is redundant; Ive just never worked with kernel level restrictions before and wanna make sure I get it right.

1) I need to use PC for personal non-League stuff: I start up my PC. Vanguard automatically boots up. I go to my system tray and exit Vanguard. That means Vanguard is completely turned off and none of my activity will be monitored?

Correct, that is the flow you'd use. FWIW, Vanguard is not monitoring your activity if you're not running VAL or (soon) League anyway, but I certainly understand wanting the extra assurance, and if you do this flow, Vanguard will be completely off until you reboot your PC.

2) I want to play League after doing non-League stuff and exiting Vanguard from system tray: But I need to restart PC manually OR i need to actually try to access League client, which will then prompt me to restart PC?

Also correct. If you try to launch League without rebooting, Riot Client will tell ya you gotta restart (exact same as you'd see in VALORANT today). Else, you just reboot and Vanguard will be initialized for when you're ready to play.

Sorry if this is redundant; Iv...

This deployment process seems really well thought out. I don't think I remember Valorant being like this when it launched, was this a lesson learned from then?

We certainly did benefit from a lot of learnings from initial launch of Vanguard+VAL. We're also just in a different situation than them, which means our approach can be different. I'm happy to hear that it feels well thought out - it was a lot of work from a lot of folks, lots of cross-team collaboration and thought went into how we can launch something like this as gracefully and lovingly as we could. <3
