the extra people are for stuff like replays etc, multiple angles (base race for example) and stuff like that, i mean if you want it to be barebones there's a directed automatic camera so you don't even need one person if you want

We have a lot of talented freelance observers in Berlin as well that has and will be a great help in the upcoming weeks! :)

Haha looks like a fun thing. On the other Hand you don’t have many colleague that have the same job to help each others

There used to be way fewer than nowaday! I think more and more people have become interested now to become observers and it's great to see :D

I somehow never thought about how the camera work in live games works.

Well now I have so many questions... Is it a full time job? What do you do when there are no games? How did you become an official observer? Is there only one observer in a game? Or are there multiple observers and the director chooses which one to show?

I'll answer the best i can :D

  • It's full-time for me, but other regions might handle it differently!

  • I work 5 days a week, so when there's no show, i spend the time making replays and cinematics for "match of the week" content or similar!

  • I joined about 7 years ago as a freelance observer at EU LCS and gradually just got put on a proper Riot contract :)

  • We're 3 observers in LEC, one for live (me), one for live replays / base race / PiPs, and finally one for analyst desk replays and the cinematic brolls for end of day! We don't go through a director in LEC but instead have our own little box to jump between any kind of observer feature we have! (Base race, double lane, replays etc)

On another note is being observer for big events like casters cast for big event a milestone/achievement for you ?

It is 100%! Of course, observing LEC is great and all! But since it's never guaranteed that we observe international events, it's a big milestone! I think this was my fourth MSI and I've done 4 worlds? But of those events, i've only done maybe 2 finals of each event.

It's something most observers strive to be part of one day ^

I understands why zooming out and in is good, but what I wanted to point out with this image, is that in this case (and others like it), we see more than even where players might come from. A big fight is about to take place, and it wasn't until the replay that I could watch it without squinting. Please realize, this might be just a hot take from me, but people trying to watch on a laptop, or even on their phone, might just be left out.

This was just an extreme example that I noticed in this game. In places where the zoom out just barely clips players on the edges of the screen, I can see why it has to go out so much. But, here it felt more like... well, every player was accounted for at a zoom level much closer than what was used. I just don't want it to feel like the zoom is being used as a substitute for moving the camera to follow the action, which is how it felt here.

Thank you so much for the reply, and I hope I didn't come off as a bit too entitled.

And, if it helps to know, I also watch a lot of pro dota games as well. There, in games where there's a lucky two observers, they tend to use picture in picture to catch flanks / far off screen action to the main body of the team fight. I realize that's not always possible for league content though, so I appreciate the attempt at getting things into view.

I completely understand and it is something i'm actively trying to keep in mind when i think about people on laptops! I notice it myself when i watch vods on laptop and such. Appreciate your input though and just know i'll keep that in mind at least! :)

It's definitely not to just do it the lazy way, i promise haha.

I appreciate the feedback! :D It's nice when people are passionate about how they experience the game.

I was the one observing here and the one zooming out. I believe a lot of what goes into who wins a fight, is the position and movements of the players during objective control plays!

It may not look as pretty depending on the angle, but it helps everyone get an overall idea of what went right and wrong in a teamfight (vision, position and flanks). Since we work on a 1.5-2 second delay only, we gotta get all the information we can!

For example, if i had been zoomed in on the fight and a wild Gragas suddenly entered the frame out of nowhere, some people might wonder "How did he get there?" or "When did he get there?". It's so everyone knows, including ourselves, who or what to focus on when we pull up the replay based on what popped off the most in the teamfight ^

I hope this makes sense :)

LCS and LEC observers this season have been panning away from lane skirmishes randomly to farming lanes, honestly a bit annoying

Hm i don't remember doing that, since i would have no reason to ;~; I would only really pan away if i knew a gank or play was coming in somewhere else (to catch the setup) and the current skirmish would be small D:

Relvarionz

Usually the problem is biased casters but now its actually observers that are biased as fuck.

We've had 0 replays for RNG plays, where is first blood? Where is the 1v1 of Bin? Where is the 1v2 of Bin?

I didn’t know it came off as bias :( But I can assure you that if a replay wasn’t played, it was because a lot of potential action was happening to the point that the replay became old or there was multiple individual deaths in a row that were not worth breaking down cause it may have been a simple 1v3 without any outplay :(

NamikazeEU

Wtf is with observers randomly switching camera when teamfight/skirmish is on ???

I miss clicked the wrong midlander once 😭😭😭😭😭

CelestialTerra

Oh don't mind me 😭 my comment was just a reaction to that Caps pov replay which was played too early so all we saw was him farming minions. It was a really chaotic match so I understand the struggles

Aww I remember, it definitely was chaotic 😭

IforgotmyAOLpassword

I didn't know lec observers were on the job during msi, thought it was the lck guys. Don't let the guy get you down you are doing good.

We’re working it with the NA obs team <3

CelestialTerra

god damn msi production/observers is terrible LMAO

I’m sorry you feel so :< I thought personally we managed despite having 3 actions at the same time across multiple lanes and during the whole game D: I’ll try and do better :<

azersub

Sry bit i had to hijack this comment.

How did you get a job as LEC observer?

I had some volunteer experienced, they needed more and I applied ^ Now I've been doing the live observing for years in LEC and a few times at Worlds and MSI :D

CuteTao

The delay is at the beginning of the game and as the game progresses they shorten the delay during the replays until its completely gone so that the game ends live. Jatt revealed this all during a broadcast once.

We had that setup about 4 years ago :) our delay live now varies between 2 and 4 seconds! 2 seconds for events like worlds and msi and a bit more for LEC for example! We had a year where we went 0 seconds but it resulted in too many freezes live :)

versipellis_

Are you sure they are handling that the same in every league? Jatt was surely talking about LCS. That’s a completely different production than LEC.

I regularly talk with the observers there so yes! Unless they’ve just reverted back! Because we usually use the same system

Kittenscute

There should be a ping that says "help me get vision" instead.

"Require vision" is only useful when you are trying to get other people to place down vision for the team.

"Help me get vision" is also useful for supports or whoever is placing down wards/clearing wards so they communicate to their team they are trying to contest vision in an area and need escorts.

I usually use the "Assist me" ping which works perfectly for this!

38erJustus

tho sometimes it felt like there were too many replays

Guess it's hard to get a middle ground since there were also people complaining about us doing too few :(

GeoffBlum

Is ClakeyD still observing?

Don't think he has observed for a couple of years now.

Thank you so much for the praise! We don't usually get the positive kind of praise, so this really means a lot <3

It was a mix of LEC and LCS observers. 1 live observer from each and then 2 NA and 1 EU for replays and such rotation. (Same as MSI) Awesome people to work with, love them to bits!

Definitely not normal. Maybe it’s an observer thing?

It's an observer thing, yeah :D
