God tier luck

Honestly, this being the first time we've had a public-facing statement about shields that isn't a straight "no" or diplomatic "that would be neat", has got a lot of us excited and talking in the community, since every other time we've had the topic, it was very much in the camp of "not happening". It does mean that some people's hearts for weapon 9 or 10 is definitely gonna be set on it now, though, so I hope the community-at-large treats what's been said here with a bit of charity, especially if things don't turn out so neatly.

Everybody's looking forward to whatever comes for Dauntless in 2020 regardless! Can't wait for another year of supporting this great game and community.

Me too. And we have BIG year ahead of us. I'm just putting a lot of the vision stuff together for the team. I'm really excited to share more. I'm also excited to find new ways of showing what we are up to, while still being able to stoke the fire when it's time.

HypnoticZexy

Well I’m sorry to have gone on previous information from Dev comments made, but your attitude sucks..

I’ve seen nothing but wonderful support and communication from this whole community but this is the first time I got the shits by a reply. I’m actually excited by the sword and shield concept, just keep coms open and honest and you will keep the loyalty of the fan base. Peace dude.

That's 100% my bad. In rereading that I see that I was more flippant than I intened to be. My apologies. I was short handing from my phone and should have reread it before hitting send.

Don't feel like an idiot. GTez doesn't control everything else every other lobster says, and this is the very first time we've been told anything other than "no" or "that's nice" on the topic of shields.

It's not misinformation - it's old information, and no communication to a pivot on design until now.

I'm also not privy to all conversations too. The combat team may not be in a place where they are ready to talk about this stuff. And our industry trains Devs that they get in shit if they say something before it's ready to talk about. Either by their boss or the community if they change the design. We try not doing that (all of us) but old habits die hard.

Zehdarian

Well they hit your 2019 list 95% so here's hoping.

Let's see how fast we can hit the 2020 list ;)

KorrupiKid

So you're saying a shield is possible in the future?

And happy new year.

Yep. One of the earliest weapon concepts we have is a Spearish-Sword and Shield concept that took a lot of inspiration from this fight sequence. The shield concepts that I’ve been discussing, in the last year or so, are not the tanky-knight fantasy, but instead a skirmisher’s weapon where the shield is more for deflection. What we don’t want is this initially. Though the fantasy of Braum is also interesting and something we should think about, but that’s not the fantasy we’re currently discussing internally. Again, it’s beyond early though and not actively in development.

Apparently a shield is not a weapon they are ever interested in adding

umm, I’m sorry you’re super misinformed. It’s not the weapon we’re currently working on, but it’s absolutely on the list.

Weapons rework

  • The weapons right now are far more superior compared to what they were a year ago. And with the addition of various weapon specials and mods, it made the weapons much more versatile than they were before.

New game modes

  • Trials and Escalation have been added since then. Everyone has got a lot to say about these two modes but I'm glad that we get to do more stuff outside patrols and pursuits.

Load outs

  • Most-requested-feature-ever. Remember back then when we had to change gear each time we queued up for a hunt? I'm just glad the days of hastily changing cells and gears in the airship are gone.

Leaderboards

  • Not exactly the kind of leaderboards I had in mind back then but it was integrated in Trials instead and I'm kind of satisfied with it for now.

Third dye layer

  • Best fashion quality of life update ever!

Revamped daily dual

  • Oh and revamp they did! It's called Escalation and it's far superior than what daily dual was. Alpha and CBT players that have played Daily Dual will agree.

Revamped guild system

  • It did get some changes like it becoming completely free and the guild cap being added but I would really like to see some more major improvements with it like a guild hub or something, basically anything that would improve the social aspects of the game. At the moment, I view guilds as a glorified group chat. That's my take at least.

Reworked transmogs

  • Remember back when we would only use transmogs armors bought from the store and maybe a few behemoth gears converted into transmogs because you had to spend 1 stone each time you wanted to change it? I'm really grateful that they listened to all the "1 transmog stone should permanently unlock a gear" posts people made here in the subreddit. I thought it was kind of obvious from the get-go but I'm just glad that they finally did it.

Radiant/umbral proc

  • Hmm.. Terra arrived more recently compared to when radiant and umbral were added but it still got a proc effect before those two could. To be fair, I can't think of a good proc effect idea for them that won't be too stale or too op. Maybe they're inherently not meant to have one.

More plot/story development

  • We did get a couple more plot developments through the intro cinematic and hunt pass blogs but I would personally like to see some more plot integrated into the gameplay itself or some other mediums. Personally, I don't like getting plot details from reading quest lines or blog posts because I find it stale and unconvincing. I believe in the Show, don't tell technique of storytelling. Show us why behemoths are bad and show us that Ramsgate is in danger because of these behemoths. I wouldn't consider this as a top priority though. The game should, first and foremost, focus on the gameplay and combat experience as it is the core. Maybe in the years to come when the game has more than enough content and resources, then perhaps they can start enriching the game's plot even further.

More optimizations

  • We got a lot of optimizations, we got a couple more that unintentionally broke those previous optimizations, but we eventually got more optimizations to make it better again! All in all, this game runs far smoother and better than it did a year ago.

Unlocked fps

  • Yes!!! 120Hz and 240Hz monitor users rejoice! We finally got a use out of them.

It's been a long journey. The game had it's ups and downs. Some noteworthy moments that transpired throughout 2019 were the great platform divide we had back in January, the arrival of the behemoth we all love to hate - Boreus, in March, the addition of the mastery system back in April, the monumental launch on PS4, Xbox1, and EGS in May, the addition of Trials game mode in July, the back-to-back release of Loadouts as well as the game's official launch into 1.0 in September, the controversial balance changes in October, and the recent addition of the Escalation game mode in December. All in all, 2019 was a really great year for Dauntless and it is its best year yet. Dauntless' future truly is bright and I cannot wait to see what they have for us this year.

Here's hoping for an even better year for Dauntless! 🍻

Thanks for reading and Happy New Year, everyone! 🎉

We got a lot more coming too! We're just getting warmed up.

The game has only been out on Switch for a couple weeks at this point. When it came out on XBOX/PS4, it was similarly abysmal in performance, and rapidly improved. Expect the same for the Switch - the QA team lead was on the last Dev Stream and confirmed she and her team had a solid plan for immediate performance increases locked in, and we've also learned that includes enabling Boost Mode and possibly turning off auto-capture. That said, expect every patch to include some kind of performance tweak for the near future.

This is correct. We've got a number of patches coming up and a team dedicated to performance. Will also continue to improve global performance too.

RenoxDashin

lol playing right now. havent left yet.

Ohhh I thought you meant you had left when I read this:

You guys seem like a great company, even if I left and stopped playing.

My bad! :)

Thanks! I look forward to adding a bunch more game and welcoming you back!

I'm sorry you gotta see this ugly side of the sub. Anything that doesn't cater to the casuals gets downvoted. Esp when it comes to trials.

In short, its how they manage sharding on the servers. We've made many suggestions and just waiting on them to review how they want to change it.

It would be better if retry just refreshed the instance instead of creating a new one, but that infrastructure isn't in the game ATM.

This is on our to do list. Overall better retry and post match tools for players is something we want to fix sooner rather than later.

If you hit up epics account page. Link you'll be able to check what accounts are linked. Assuming both your PS4 and Switch accounts are linked, the rest will just work.

As I get a chance to decompress a little bit over the crazy last few months and recharge for the next year. I really want to say a big thanks to the entire Dauntless community.

I've had the opportunity to lead a number of games in my past with far less welcoming and loving folks in it. Everyday I'm energized to help build a better game for this awesome group of people because of how open, caring, honest, and awesome this community is.

The game has come a huge way since we first announced and started getting feedback, due in large part to the way we interact as a big team. From the memes, to the suggestion threads, to the jokes and bug posts, to the personal stories about how Dauntless has changed your lives, your interaction fuels me and the rest of the team more than you probably know.

Thank you very much and keep being awesome. <3

New to this too! Can someone tell me how to open inventory? And when you play on switch you are supposed to get “Skyfighter pack” but after finding it in eshop it doesn’t appear in the game.. anyone else with this problem?

Might need to restart the game, if you bought it while the game was suspended.

Sorry :( Big update was big. We try really hard to keep diffs as small as possible.

Make sure you're being good to your body! Thanks for being a part of the community and the kind words. Launch days are tough days and these messages really reinforce why we do this and are so inspiring. <3

I still have that reaction too

What kind of hurdles did you have to overcome to enable crossplay? What was the most difficult? On a scale of 1-10 how much of a top priority was crossplay?

Cross play was the hardest thing I've done in my 20 year career. From a priority perspective, it was really high. We have a One Dauntless Vision which is: Wherever you are, on whatever platform you want to play on, in Dauntless you can have fun with your friends. That's been a guiding light since the beginning in 2014.

I gave a talk on this recently at the Montreal International Game summit, and I'm sure we'll share it as soon as the event makes it available.
