What is EUD?

EUD stands for “Extended Unit Death.” It’s a type of trigger that’s used in the StarCraft Map Editor. Early on, clever modders used the EUD trigger in unexpected ways, enabling them to employ whole new gameplay mechanics that were not possible in StarCraft otherwise. This allowed modders to create all sorts of unexpected experiences—from “Bullet Hell” shooters and rhythm games, to card games, video players, and much more. Unfortunately, the very thing that made the EUD trigger so useful to modders also made it easy to exploit. For the security of our players (not to mention StarCraft itself), we had to block the use of EUD maps.

Revisiting EUD

While we were developing StarCraft: Remastered, we’d consistently receive feedback about the popularity and demand for EUD maps, so we began investigating ways to bring the trigger back without exposing the game to exploits. Today, we’re excited to announce that both PC and Mac users will be able to play some of the popular 1....

If you’d told me a year ago that I’d soon have the opportunity to introduce Lee ‘Jaedong’ Jae Dong and Kim ‘Bisu’ Taek Yong, two of the greatest StarCraft players of all time, to the wonders of American barbecue, I would have laughed out loud.

But here we are. These two legends are at BlizzCon 2017 to battle in a $25,000 StarCraft: Remastered show match that’s been dubbed the Ultimate Title Fight. They’re both headed to the military next year, a mandatory rite of passage for South Korean men, which makes this one of the last times they’ll likely compete for a major StarCraft prize pool. As a long-time fan, it’s an honor to share a meal with them. So imagine my horror when I fumble an entire BBQ rib, slathered in sauce, onto my lap.

The players are nice about it, of course. They pretend not to notice, and are too respectful even to laugh, which is remarkable, considering Bisu laughs at basically everything else.

Thankfully, the players are more careful than me; their outfits—...

On November 24, 2006, 16-year-old Lee ‘Jaedong’ Jae Dong faced a top Zerg player, widely considered to be the best in the world, in a qualifier for the 2006 Shinhan Bank OSL Season 3. The game lasted approximately eight minutes. Though Jaedong would later master the Zerg vs Zerg matchup—reaching an unprecedented and mind-boggling 81% winrate in 2009—this game quickly spiraled out of his control. The older player went on to win the whole tournament, while Jaedong didn’t even qualify.

In 2006, that result was nothing out of the ordinary. Though Jaedong’s rookie season in 2006 was impressive, with a 65% overall winrate, his opponent was on another level entirely. What’s interesting about this game is not the outcome, but the way the players reacted. The camera caught the older player throwing himself back in his chair with a forceful exhalation. Rewatching that moment today, you can see a strange relief in his expression and body language—a sense that he thinks he, the greatest player...

We recently sat down for a conversation with Daniel Barry, the former astronaut who in 1999 flew a StarCraft game disc into space aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery. The game’s historic voyage took place during STS-96, the first ever mission to dock with the International Space Station. In this interview, we discussed his family’s relationship with StarCraft, the importance of following your dreams, and the path that took him—and the game—into space.

The transcript of this interview has been edited for clarity.

Daniel Barry, M.D., Ph.D., Former NASA Astronaut: I wanted to be an astronaut as long as I can remember. As far back as forever. I was that kinda kid who was constantly jumping off stuff, trying to fly. I got a football helmet for my 5th birthday because my parents got tired of the head injuries. I didn't play football, I just jumped off everything. I hung out at the airport, clinging on to the chain link ...
