News that a team is taking longer than anticipated with a game is never easy, especially in a case where players have been eagerly anticipating any information about release, beta, etc. The forums, reddit, and social have all been a reflection of the frustration I believe a lot of OW players are feeling today, and that’s ok.

Jodie (our new CM, you’ll meet her eventually) and I have been spending the last day gathering feedback, and today we’ll be summarizing it and sending it along to the those who need to see it. While it’s important that our team does everything in our power to meet the high expectations that we all have for the Overwatch franchise, we also need to be aware of how it affects the community that’s grown up around our game.

In the meantime, I want you all to know that we understand what’s happening on the forums. While we still believe that this is the right thing to do for the team, the game, and ultimately the players, we get the emotions being shared today.

How about a more simple yes or no question, will there be any juicy lore? I am personally starving for some Overwatch lore.

The upcoming Cassidy event is not to reveal his new name, nor do we intend to have Cowboy’s new name be a celebratory moment.

What’s most likely driving confusion is the fact that we decided to delay the original event to account for the updated name.

The formatting issues with the patch notes was completely my fault. As someone pointed out, those were line breaks that didn’t properly transfer over from one format to another. It’s something I’m aware of and will be looking out for in the future.

The issues with notes being posted with different languages/characters is something I’m already looking into with our Web and Localization teams and should be resolved soon, if it’s not already.

The absolute best thing you can do to raise our awareness of these issues is to post in the Bug Report forums.

It’s beneficial to be a perpetual student when you’re a CM. I am always reading new studies, new whitepapers, and listening to experts in fields like behavioral psychology and sociology. Understanding what motivates players beyond what we see on the surface is key to being effective facillitators of conversation. Plus it’s heck of interesting.

I’m somewhat familiar with Vroom-Yetton (Jago). Like many leadership philosophies, it lends itself well to community management.

While we rarely will quote comments that include hyperbole or obvious emotional investment, we do like to make sure that we are conveying both sentiment and emotion, albeit in a more unbiased way.

Do I need to?

I believe that most players are rational when you get them in a 1:1 conversation and don’t really believe that game developers for a franchise like Overwatch would actually play favorites.

Balance changes over time can influence that perception, and to some players be demonstrable proof, however I think that we all (deep down) understand that balance and design requires a holistic view of the game that takes the bigger picture into account.

It’s fair that people would assume this. It’s probably better to think of it as leaning into a trope of a “cowboy sounding name”, similarly to how other characters have done before us.

Just to be very clear: this is not the case.

Friendly reminder that abusing the report system is in and of itself an actionable offense.
