(2021) Update to the League Client

We need your help! We have upgraded the Chromium version that the League Client runs on.

TL;DR- We've been doing work behind the scenes to improve the performance of the League Client. Functionally, you should see no change (other than increased performance!).

However, we need to ensure that all areas of the League Client are still functioning as intended. As you check out 11.17 on PBE, please keep an eye out for any bugs or unexpected behavior while interacting with the League Client. We are specifically looking for things that haven't been seen on live and are new to the build (your best guess is totally fine too!).

I've been running on a bug with the Riot client itself.

Having the same logins for both Live and PBE Servers bugs out the Client.

If I try to connect to PBE Servers, it will automatically switch me to Live EUW Servers (As you can see on the video bellow I'm French so this is my main server, don't worry about Random picked up server).

Whatever I try to open the Main or PBE client, it switches me anyway and signing-out is not working either to help me connect to my PBE Account.

I'm pretty sure this is linked from me using the exact same creditentials for both servers. So I'm probably not the only guy running this issue then.

I'll try in the meantime some basic Troubleshooting stuff (Repearing, Reinstalling, ect) and eventually have different logins.

EDIT : Changed the logins and I learned something : using your Live account logins will connect you to the Live Server anyway! Whatever you picked PBE or Live (EUW).
Launching the PBE client and selecting EUW Servers and entering my new logins of my PBE account connects me to PBE.

So the Selecting Region button has literally no impact on the Riot Client.

Heya! The regionless login can definitely be confusing. You should no longer have the same login credentials for any one account, regardless of region. I'm not sure how it works if you had the same login for each region, but I know when I created a PBE account, it wouldn't let me keep my live login; which it sounds like you got that sorted out. You can now use the same League icon on your desktop to launch any region since it's all account based (no two regions can have the same username)

Is this the reason why the practice tool seems to be bugged or something? I can't seem to start a practice tool game. When I try to create one and click on "find match" the button doesn't do anything. Asked a friend and he seems to have the same problem as well.

I'm going to look into it, it's possible this is the cause though. Thanks for the report!

A quick thought: Why not use Selenium or other web testing frameworks to make sure functionality doesn't break? Or there are some cases or functionalities that can't be tested this way?

I think we do or at least can use selenium in some places, though I'm not familiar with it. This is definitely something I want to look into further to see if we can leverage it.

Is it just me or is the Training Tool broken? Can't load a training tool game at all.

Thanks so much, I appreciate it! I've been dying to have a look at some the new skins ingame myself (and not only watch videos of them) but don't feel like committing to a full summoner's rift game on high ping, so not getting into a practice game has been a bummer.

You can create a custom game and check them out! The only downside is that you don't have access to the cheats menu.

what about the new loading screen? were the animations changed on purpose or is it a bug? because switching a champion card back and forth lacks any sort of animation and it feels extremely clunky.

This isn't related to our changes, but I will pass this on to the dev team!

Last night I updated the PBE client on my laptop, it started downloading and everything looked normal. When I tried to log in though, it sort of froze before the usual "loading" screen, and it doesn't go any further than that. Can't even close the client from that point, have to use the task manager. This has happened every time I have tried to open the PBE client. Regular client in EUW works as usual, it's only the PBE that does this for me. Will try troubleshooting and restarting my laptop but it's weird.

Hmmm, I don't like the sound of that. Is it possible to send a video of what you're experiencing?

The FIRST time I tried launching the PBE, it said something about a plugin not being found. No additional text. Subsequent launch attempts only gave me the standard, generic "a problem occurred".

If all I have to do is uninstall and re-download, that's fine, but I'm very confused by all this.

Hmm thats strange.. do you have a screenshot by chance of what you're seeing?

Hey! I came to report a bug that's been bothering me for some time now. Sometimes when I try to log in and click play, the client appears to be loading and normally you'd think it could be a connection issue but it never loads and so I always have to close it and redo the whole process. It never happened more than once and was always working after I restart the client so I think it's indeed not my connection but rather some bug to do with the client. While it's still loading it shows me the friend list box but its empty, i can see my in game name and my icon gets changed to an old default one which I'm not sure what it's supposed to be but I always assumed it was like an old minion or something. It has a yellow background with some red dynamic lines and it's like this wooden thing with white eyes and it has spikes and arms and holds a shield or something like that.. Hopefully my comment wasn't confusing haha 😭😅

I forgot to mention something, sometimes I'm also unable to pick a skin and my connection is fine. I'd be able to change runes and spells and ward skins but the regular skin would still have a golden frame over the skin I picked last time but no matter how many times click on another skin that I'd like to play, it still ends up staying on the one which I used last time (also I never had high ms or lagged after experiencing this, so it was some kind of champ select bug for sure

The icon you're describing is the default one for when you are disconnected from the server, so it kind of makes sense in a roundabout way because you don't seem to be connecting on the first try for some reason.

Have you tried running the repair tool or just actually reinstalling? I wonder if you have a corrupt file somewhere...

Hi! May this be the reason for my game bugging whenever I alt tab? I alt-tab a lot to change music while playing, but since yesterday whenever I do it my game bugs and won't let me go back to the game. I click the icon and nothing happens, even if i close the process i can't go back.

Are you playing in borderless (as opposed to fullscreen or windowed)? If not, I'd suggest starting with that!

Maybe try reinstalling Riot Client? It's in its own folder under Riot Games

Language settings are ignored by the client.

Like everywhere in the client or just specific places? I'm aware of a bug right now where changing locales is not working at all.

Mostly, so far as I am writing this message it only does mixed in Runes page, Emote names seem translated, Eternals, skin names while looking at a champions page (not in collection, Store itself looks to be translated as well. In TFT page itself the "Battle Pass, Match history, TFT Missions, Upgrade and Free are untranslated while pass rewards are translated.

Keep in mind this for Hungarian client only, I have no idea if these apply to other clients language.

Is this the case on live or just PBE? Can you try reproducing this on the pbe build that goes out today?

I've seen that before too, but not really sure why that happens. I think the main thing is that as long as all the processes combined stay below 500mb ish, you should be fine.

Appreciate the report. I was hoping this bug was related to the practice tool issue, but that doesn't seem to be the case. I'm working on tracking this down.

This is a PBE only case, will see about todays build when it deploys and write back to you!

Appreciate the info. I'm hoping you're seeing the English names because those new skins just haven't been localized yet. As for Patch Notes and Overview, I'm not quite sure yet.

Our dev confirmed that this is intended. This is related to the CEF network service. Chromium split a lot of work up to reduce crashing and improve recovery. We chose to keep them separate instead of wrapping them into one service, making the client more robust.

Discord and Slack do the exact same thing with their processes.
