No, you can make a backup of the save like that. I suggest moving it out of the savegames folder and keeping it somewhere else. Then you can open the save and see how things are and if something breaks, you have the backup to use.

The 25th will have a dev diary detailing all the goodies we get in the free patch, but for now yesterdays dev diary confirmed a few things that will be in the free patch:
The free part of this DLC, includes a majorly overhauled metro system. You can now adjust the height of metro tracks, which means tracks and stations can be underground, street level, or even above ground on elevated platforms! Included in the free content update are also the new Healthcare facilities. After building them, you may notice more children being born in the city and some citizens living slightly longer than others.

Any that were made as metro vehicles will be useable with Sunset Harbor without mods. Any that are trains, which MOM converts to metro will need a mod to be used with the new metro in Sunset Harbor, or would need to be remade as metro vehicles. We will just have to see what options we will have once the DLC releases and mods update or are made for it. :)

Not any good ones. You can disable automatic updates and switch Steam in offline mode - but Steam offline mode disables the workshop, so if you're doing it to keep a modded city, then it won't work. Instead of offline mode, you CAN disconnect the internet before starting the game, which should work (I haven't tested it since before the launcher), but it's an awkward solution.
Thanks to the modding beta we tend to not have long with broken mods though, so personally I wouldn't bother. I play heavily modded with ~100 mods and ~3000 assets and the last few patches I've been able to jump into my cities again after a couple of days. The modders are doing an awesome job preparing for patches and updating mods quick.
Originally posted by NewMasterChoco: I wait about a week or two. Too bad since I just got back into the game but until then, I can play every night and work on my city little by little. I am definitely looking forward to the next DLC and the Creator's Pack for "Modern Japan". I am going to create my Little Tokyo!

Hopefully it won't even take that long. The last 2 patches it was a couple of days before we could play heavily modded cities again. :) I will update this post after release, so you can always check this to see if your mods have been updated and you can get back to building. :)

If you do end up having problems, I and others in the community can help figure out what the problem is. The important thing is just to never save over your savegame file. And I would recommend making a copy of it to store somewhere on your computer as a backup. It never hurts to have a backup just in case. :)
