This is a remastered version of the game so the download manifest is very different from the live game.

Then why not just have the beta as an opt in for the original game instead of redownloading the entire thing?

It would replace the whole game with this 40gb version. Then you'd only have the beta version of the game, and no access to the live game. It's 40gb. It's not tooo big a deal.

Fairly big when space is a concern, i had to uninstall the base game to have more room for it.

The process of updating the main game with a beta would have resulted in the same thing, but this way for people with lots of space, they can use the live game and the beta.
