It’s rampant in China and Korea for a reason, keeps the player engaged

I'm not actually sure to what degree there is a net benefit for allowing this to happen. It might keep one very dedicated player engaged, but think of all of the other players who may have a bad experience that may consider not wanting to play anymore.

One could also argue that if someone is dedicated enough that they'd be willing to fork out money on a new account to keep playing that they'd be just as likely to create a new account if buying an account was not an option available to them, and the only thing permitting (And, to be clear, we're not permitting it explicitly) account sale/compromise does is negatively impact players who have their accounts compromised and sold.

I don't think it's as clear cut as it appears on the face of the it.

At any rate, there is a difference between "Riot explicitly wants this to happen", and "It happens a lot in specific communities". At least in the security team the opinion is that we don't want this to happen because it causes a lot of heada...

There was/is a pretty successful League YouTuber who openly bought accounts, played on viewers accounts and even encouraged viewers to give him accounts, I remember reporting it and that many others did the same only for nothing to happen at all.

Maybe things have changed, but throughout the 13~ years of League, everything has shown that you don't really care that much.

I know there is at least one individual that encourages the purchase of accounts right now specifically because it's the easiest thing to do. That's what I was alluding to with the "carrot" part - I think there are reasons why one might want to get a "fresh" account and that's something we'll have to consider.

All I can really say is that we do care about this and would like to resolve it. This is what I said back when someone asked me why we didn't care about MFA and then released it, and I'm going to have to say the same thing here :(

Is there any specific time metric? For example account that is inactive atleast 5 years?

Any account that meets the criteria in the post that has not been active for at least three years

Rexsaur

These are so situnational that its really only going to hit those accounts that were made and then instantly thrown away.

Not so related but a bit related question, what about perma banned accounts? Do u guys have any plan on every deleting them? Or atleast freeing the nickname they are holding as summoner name on banned accounts apparently never expire, which is lame if you ask me (once i wanted a nickname which was on an old, apparently permabanned account since it was already past expiring but i still couldnt change into it).

I don't have any plans at this time to "go after" perma-banned accounts, but it is possible there is overlap (ie accounts perma-banned 3 years ago may be caught up in this)

Shitconnect

Does it also affect permabanned accounts?

Asking for a friend...

I don't believe we have explicit opt-outs for perma-banned accounts. However, if you do get affected and you're interested in keeping your account, you will still be able to prevent it from being deleted by following the steps in the email you receive. This applies to everyone, not just people who have been perma-banned.

Of course, if you do have a perma-banned account, it'll still be permanently banned even after you prevent the deletion if that were to happen

Hi, I'm the engineer working on this. If you have any questions about it, this is a good place to ask them!

EDIT: hey, there are a lot of replies. if I don't get to yours it's because I either answered in part elsewhere throughout the reply chain, or because I didn't see it. sorry :(

What motivated this? Storage issues? API issues?

Privacy & security concerns.

Every account is an email address and some other personal information that we are liable for.

Every account, especially inactive ones, could potentially turn into one that gets compromised and causes Bad Things to happen in games.

We're pretty sure that the accounts we've identified using the criteria in the post probably won't be coming back - although we'd love to be proven wrong - and it doesn't make sense to hold on to data for the sake of holding on to data.

Storage space is really cheap these days so it's not really a motivator

if you submit a player support ticket, they will absolutely look into this and take appropriate action

?

Boy, this is embarrassing. This was not the situation when I last submitted a report to them. Let me talk with our player support team.

EDIT: I'm back! So it turns out that during periods of exceptionally high traffic, this might be the message you get. However, in general submitting a report to a player support is the right decision if you forgot to report a player after the game. As the message says, you should prefer to report players after the game instead of using player support as a cudgel, so to speak. Our messaging coaxes players toward post-game reporting for this reason.

they will look into it for sure, and not reply with a copy paste of how screenshots are not proof because they can be faked and "will look into it can't and won't notify you if anything happens". check their op.gg later, they're still doin gucci. it's been years guys, come'on, at least come up with better stories.

Screenshots aren't proof on their own. For each one of these reports, if found to be credible, an investigation will be started and we will look directly at the chat logs.

An action may or may not be taken on a particular account based on those chat logs, which might not extend to a ban - for example, chat restrictions or forced name changes do not show up on op.gg.

I'm sorry that you don't have much faith in the process. I understand why, and I hope we can one day improve that faith. But this is what happens - I'm not making stuff up.

Lol, support look into it. They only Autobahn off a list.

I'm not sure what the german train network has to do with this.

OP, if you submit a player support ticket, they will absolutely look into this and take appropriate action. That is assuming that the report system hasn't already gotten to them.

Simbah_SC

Autobahn

It's the highway in germany, not a train network :P

Ah, I just remember from my one trip to Frankfurt being fined on the train network mb :(

year of the duck.

also, I love this LEC crowd

how did you get your foot into riot without a degree?

I had been working as software engineer for a couple of years. A post showed up on Reddit, and I responded to it. /u/xNymia, a former Rioter, showed the post to the person who would eventually become my team lead and manager. They invited me to interview with them for a position as an application security engineer. The rest is history.

In general, we don't require degrees to work at Riot. However, if you're trying to get a new position specifically in a place where you require visa sponsorship, a degree is almost certainly required because of immigration laws.

750 disposable on a £16k salary

Teach me how you did it omg, I'm budgeting on 16k right now and it's hard

This was back in 2013. My rent was only 400 pounds and everything was a lot cheaper than it is now. I didn't (and still don't) have any life outside of video games, no kids, no school debt, no gf etc

Horuslevel8

30 seconds of google reveal you easily make 100k+

Like yeah yeah cost of living, we get it, but that isnt funny at all and looks childish as fuck.

I actually publish my salary as part of pay transparency efforts within the gaming industry. That said, where I live, it's definitely true that I will likely never own a house with a lawn. Apartments here cost 400-500k, let alone houses! In California, where I'm moving to, you're looking at 3-4x that. House prices have risen faster than salaries have, and that's true in most places.

I don't really want to argue with you; I'm sorry the joke didn't land well with you.

Edit: added an updated report since you reminded me I needed to this year

Originally the doublelift was for face checking a bush and dying from when he did that multiple times at season 1 worlds.

I thought it was when Doublelift walked into a Viktor and instantly blew up: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Fgvzk1V42c
