Since the release of Tome I Level III earlier this week, we have been keeping an eye out for feedback regarding the difficulty of challenges. While we intended for challenges to get gradually more difficult from one Level to the next, between your feedback and playing through the Tome ourselves, this most recent Level ended up being a little harder than we’d like, creating frustration for those who just want to complete the Tome and Rift. With this in mind, we have decided to reduce the requirements for most Level III challenges. 

When we originally planned the Tome and Rift, we had designed it in such a way that you would earn enough fragments from Player XP to finish The Rift by the time you complete all the challenges. Since the challenges can now be completed in fewer matches, you may need to play additional matches after completing the Tome in order to reach Tier 70 in The Rift.

Since it has been a while since we last shared stats, these graphs show data from the past three months unless otherwise stated. Please keep in mind that numbers are not everything; there are a whole bunch of factors that could influence these numbers.

Killer power vs. popularity

Starting off with how frequently killers are played compared to how well they tend to do on average. A 50% kill rate would be the equivalent of two survivors dying and two survivors escaping.

Is there a good reason why Freddy starts a trial with his teleport on cooldown?

Spawning next to the killer can be frustrating and feels unfair. Allowing Freddy to teleport to a generator that you spawned next to right away would feel very similar. We decided it was best to avoid this by putting the dream projection on cooldown as soon as the match starts. As always, we'll be monitoring how this plays out and make changes as needed. We are not opposed to the idea, but we also don't feel it is necessary at this time.

Welcome to the November edition of our Developer Update, a series of posts detailing upcoming changes and our progress on ongoing issues. As always, we’ll start by recapping on previous topics before jumping into future updates.

Dedicated Servers

For a little over a month, dedicated servers have been live on the PC version of the game. Over the course of this test, we have often been asked why the servers were left on without any updates. We’d like to take this opportunity to explain a little more about this test.

First and foremost, we can tweak certain values behind the scenes without requiring a game update. This includes things like what the game deems to be an acceptable connection and various matchmaking elements. This way, we can test a variety of changes without forcing everyone to update their game repeatedly.

Status Update on the Nintendo Switch

We are still working on getting the update ready for the Nintendo Switch. In testing, we discovered some platform specific issues that prevented us from releasing the mid-chapter at the same time as other platforms. We are currently testing a potential build and hope to release it as soon as we are confident with its performance. The Switch will jump straight to version 3.2.2 when the update goes live.

Our plan was to release the 3.3.0 Mid-Chapter update along with the Withering Blight event on October 22nd, but due to some instability with the build, we decided it was best to postpone the launch until the major issues are resolved. We would like to take this opportunity to fill you in on what’s going on and where we stand with the 3.3.0 update.

What caused the delay

Given this is one of the largest updates for the game, including a large amount of changes and new content, some issues are unfortunately bound to pop up.

First, in order to support the new features, we needed to update the backend which handles everything behind the scenes, such as: Saving your progress, handling purchases, making matches, and much more.

We have also updated the engine to the Unreal Engine 4.22. The engine is like a foundation that the game is built on, and changes to the foundation can have an impact in other areas of the game.

We are happy to celebrate the most horrific time of the year, where the stench of rotting Pustula Plants fills the air across the Entity’s realm. Soon, the Withering Blight event will be upon us, and we don’t want you to go unprepared. 

Classic Tricks 

In addition to spooky campfire decorations, some staples of past Halloween events have returned, including: 

  • The Will O' Wisp flashlight 
  • The All Hallows' Eve Lunchbox 
  • The Pustula Petals offering 

You can find these limited time items scattered throughout newly generated Bloodwebs and in chests for the duration of the event. You will keep any leftover items and be able to use them year round, but be warned: Any unused Pustula Petals will stay in your inventory, but will not be useable after the event period.

For the past few months, we have been reviewing the Nurse and her add-ons. We are pleased to say that these changes will be available in the upcoming mid-chapter update, and we would like to take a moment to share some insight into thought process behind them. 

There were several things we wanted to address when revisiting the Nurse. First, all killers should have 4 common, 5 uncommon, 5 rare, 4 very rare and 2 ultra rare add-ons- the Nurse previously did not meet this condition as she was created before this standard was put in place. Many of her add-ons also had downsides or effects that hindered players' muscle memory, causing them to be very rarely used. Others had unintended side effects that made them much stronger than intended (notably the range add-ons which in turn granted reappearance speed, sometimes referred to as "omega blink"). Matchmaking 

Recently, the matchmaking system was changed to use the highest rank in a Survivor group when searching for a Killer. This change prevents groups from using a single low ranked player to abuse the matchmaker and get less experienced opponents. 

We are on the lookout for any potential edge cases that may remain. To give you an idea of what is expected of the matchmaking system, here’s how the system works: 

  • Survivors are matched to a Killer as close to their rank as possible.
