Just pushed a quick update to RimWorld. Language and creative content update, as well as some bugfixes. All mods and saves should remain compatible. New build is 1.0.2096.

@direGoldfish Humble Widget is good. But we use a service called @SendOwlHQ which is really cost-efficient for this. You need to set up a direct relationship with PayPal/Stripe, and an AWS account, and handle taxes on your end, but the only noticeable cost is the 1.5-3% from Stripe/PayPal.

@direGoldfish @SendOwlHQ We sold direct exclusively from 2013-2016, before RimWorld went on Steam. It was invaluable to get that feedback during that period to make sure the game was ready for the larger Steam audience. These days, direct sales are like <2% of the total. @direGoldfish @SendOwlHQ I think it's always a good idea to progressively expand the audience, leaving time to adapt to feedback at each stage. Self->IRL Friends->Trusted online friends->Direct sales->Steam Early Access->Steam final Things are way less stressful/risky this way. So I'd do it again.
cliffski
I'm just going to throw this hand grenade at twitter and then run away: https://t.co/dw5Y1y3wQL
@cliffski Sounds like 1950's-style "men are strong and women are weak, so men should take care of women" - with an added dash of collectivist resentment. Also, terrible fact checking by BBC. Her statistics on male/female wages are false even according to the activist group she linked to.

@cliffski She really ended with "richer person should pay", saying she'd pay for a poorer man. Which is reasonable and basically how I do it. Judge by individual circumstances, not collective markers. But it makes the rest of the article kind of a meaningless side-argument backed by lies.
swagentrotz
@TynanSylvester @direGoldfish @SendOwlHQ How did you deal with chargebacks?
@swagentrotz @direGoldfish @SendOwlHQ That's all handled inside PayPal/Stripe.
brachkoff
Hey, @TynanSylvester is there any plans to fix nearly life-long modded RimWorld loading times? (For sure, if it is fixable).
@brachkoff I would like to look at this, yes. But I can't guarantee any outcome.
For me, RimWorld was definitely a labor of love. If you agree, please nominate it on the Steam Awards. You can do it from the store page: https://t.co/osTnTcMynD https://t.co/s7PNc4EGrw

cilvet94
@TynanSylvester Will it be available in the Epic Games Store? Guess it's too soon to ask that
@cilvet94 I hope some day :) But of course, it's even better for people to buy it from us directly. You get Steam access and DRM-free if you buy from us directly at https://t.co/Ho6nyIe6Tq
RimWorld is on Fanatical game store today, and they were kind enough to offer a 10% off coupon as well. https://t.co/UqnWx48moA
MarnelEstrada
@TynanSylvester Does Rimworld happen to be one of the games to be featured on Epic's store? ;)
@MarnelEstrada I wish!
Players figured out that when you're attacking a base, you can shut down the turrets by bringing a sun lamp linking it to the power grid, thus exhausting the batteries. I never imagined this emergence. https://t.co/l6fiKrPkkI
@beccaellenhall I believe so, but can't recall exactly.
@mode7games Write some code to record every instance of a bark opportunity with all the context data. Have many testers play with it. Centralize all the data in a server somewhere and analyze it to figure out which combinations of circumstances need what amount of coverage.

@GameOnGardner Youtuber EDM Any "simulator" game
@FreyaTail I do remember the character well, not sure why it would disappear. We'll need to look you up in the system. Please contact [email protected] with your purchase email address.
Game websites seem to have declined to review RimWorld (per https://t.co/LrSraqv97V). Review counts: -Prison Architect: 26980 Steam (93%), 21 critic -Into the Breach: 4271 Steam (92%), 23 critic -RimWorld: 23132 Steam (97%), 1 critic What could explain this?
@Vilobion FTL was the first from Subset, it has 26 reviews.
@lemmy101 It's actually hard to tell. There are counterexamples for every theory I can think of. E.g. Star Control Origins has 12 critic reviews (and only 749 on Steam).
@josselinjp Awesome :) Yeah there are a few other reviews not listed on https://t.co/LrSraqv97V. @rockpapershot reviewed it. So did GameStar (major German magazine). I'm just using the gamerankings numbers as a comparison point.
@Christopher_Odd The same would apply to Prison Architect, but didn't.
@mcmaster I appreciate you taking the time to render an opinion!
@Christopher_Odd Moreso during the game's earlier release phase. At this point it seems pretty much saturated. And it's hard to see that making such a *huge* difference... I mean I'd expect Gamespot/IGN/major website X to not need this.
@RKade8583 I'm appreciative of anyone who takes the time to give a thought-through opinion :) A few mods may be relevant for you: https://t.co/cbWxyCvpnM I hope paused-control and mouse-only control makes RW quite accessible, though there is a lot of text and fine visual information.
@folexe ああ、本当ですか。知らなかった。教えてくれてありがとう。今このレビューを読んで勉強できる :D
@RKade8583 FYI - Down-res may not be necessary; you can use UI scaling to make things bigger. Look forward to the vid.
@Beliskner504 The thing is, RPS was actually one of the few sites that did review it!
@gavanw We did hire a guy, sent out thousands of contacts. Though perhaps we should have done it more intensively at the end. But still - 1 review only? It feels like this can't explain such a disparity.
@Benjo471 I certainly am proud! I'm just puzzled about this particular outcome as well.
My god it's beautiful - now to paint? @Rhopunzel https://twitter.com/_hazonku_/status/1072834100866609152
@felixbotka @Rhopunzel It's real close to how I'd have imagined it, I think.
@Blitzkriegsler Man your channel has grown like mad in the last couple years! I remember back when you were just getting started (same time I was) and making RimWorld 0.0.254b videos... we've come so far.
@Tenezill No.
@mode7games Well if they need monster ideas for the next "The Thing" movie they know which researchers to call. I'm also a fan of the image meme-looking one with the generated Impact font in some unknown demonic language.
@tanyaxshort My favorite version of this is: Before you start a game, sit down and write a bunch of stories of things that could happen during play. After all a game is pretty much a human-augmented procgen algo for stories.

@aerwidh Damn! Okay, forget that part.
@_GKeenan Awesome I'll have a listen ASAP :)
@SteamDB Looks like Grimm has 187 reviews on Steam but 28,000 on SteamDB - is there a bug perhaps? I just noticed because it knocked RimWorld off the #8 top rated spot :)
@piatkosia You could restrict the animals to an area where their desired food is. You can't mind-control the animals to only eat exactly what you want; this is intended.
Game artists! Ludeon Studios is looking for some help with art. Full info here: https://ludeon.com/blog/work/
@D9sinc @LudeonStudios Awww, thanks :)
@MatRoff Looking forward to it.
Of the top 6 selling games on Steam only 1 has positive reviews. The next 19 games have 16 positive. There's appears to be some kind of paradoxical relationship going on here. http://pbs.twimg.com/media/DvHpJSJX0AEDeUv.jpg
@DaniAngione Well, I think by now they know how to make an AC game. A well-executed but derivative game is probably worth an 85 IMO. That said I don't know anything about AC:O myself.
Clearly I should start marketing RimWorld to business training consultants. https://twitter.com/TimDingmanLive/status/1076917698318254085

@451655997Kafka Happy it helped you!
I missed this RimWorld review from http://gamereactor.eu! "The deepest, most engaging sci-fi colony simulation we've ever played, Lots of systems to explore, Amazing community, Fascinating lore." 10/10 Proud and thankful. https://www.gamereactor.eu/reviews/704223/RimWorld/
@GridSageGames @gavanw @unormal @FlohOfWoe @frogtoss @bartwe I feel like I hear a lot more horror stories about pointers and memory management than about GC. If you don't need every ounce of perf (e.g. you're not writing an Unreal engine competitor) then C# is a great choice. Optimal game design > optimal CPU performance
RimWorld is on http://gamereactor.eu's GOTY countdown! Pretty cool considering the competition. https://www.gamereactor.eu/articles/721113/GOTY+18+Countdown+RimWorld/
It's true, and I probably need to be more careful in contextualizing my comments about game dev process too. Pretty much everything I say these days is about indie and may be disastrous in AAA. https://twitter.com/GameOnGardner/status/1078978478056357894
RimWorld is the #1 top player-reviewed game on Steam for 2018! From all categories. Thanks so much to all those who took the time write a review, and to the whole community. I hope to keep serving you well. Rankings from: 1. https://steam250.com/2018 2. https://steamdb.info/stats/gameratings/ http://pbs.twimg.com/media/Dvx4AjDUcAAgZGY.jpg
@thebestwolfeman "I liked it" would be a fine review :) Most important thing is whether it's positive/negative. Though long written reviews are nice a simple recommend for/against is also useful

@bartwerf This is my life! But the % is much smaller :) What I do: Write them all in a giant document and do a bubble sort on them (compare pairs and swap if out of order). Sort based on player benefit per development cost. It takes a while but you get killer tasks this way.

@bartwerf EA was good for RimWorld. EA games should be fun and free of heavy bug loads, but it's useful to have a phase where a game is playable but you can still signal to players that it's changing continuously. /1
@bartwerf Not unfinished-broken but unfinished-still-changing. I think the term "Early Access" may be in need of replacement though. "Ongoing development" may be better. /2
What's a good free, lightweight PC benchmarking tool good for comparing development machines?
@waltercool For comparing development machines. Game development.

I want a laptop that I can easily slot into a larger desktop-mounted machine with more storage, CPU, and GPU power. Is there any hardware company doing this? Currently keeping desktop and laptop synced is a big pain.
@Raven67854 Small market? Everyone with a desktop and a laptop, I think.
@Raven67854 The issue is that it's not just a few files. It's every installed program, update, setting, file, saved permission/password, etc etc. I have a workable solution, but it's not a good solution.
@KalleVahlman The world of books suffers from the same issues. The degree is slightly less due to some structural differences, but not much different.
@cliffski I agree; this may be the best film of the last several years. I wish I could find more science fiction movies that were actually science fiction and not just action or romance with spaceships.
I usually wouldn't comment on reviews but this part of @PCGamer's review needs addressing. All trans character descriptions were written by players through our "Backstory in Game" program. I don't think it's my place to censor how people describe their own experiences. /1 http://pbs.twimg.com/media/DwaIoisXgAEs1Wq.jpg
@pcgamer This part of the review implies that I, as the developer, was supposed to be writing trans backstories in a more correct way. But what words can possibly be more correct than the actual words of a trans person? /2
@pcgamer We were inclusive to the varied self-perspectives of our diverse players - and it's used as a point against the game. The review gives no indication of where the quoted words came from, misleading readers into thinking that it was all written by some misguided game writer. /3
@pcgamer I am asking @PCGamer to issue a correction to clarify that these words they're calling "reductive" and "bad taste" were written by players describing their own trans self-perspectives, not by a game writer. @ELahti @SamMGreer /4
@ki11deer @pcgamer No need, there's lots of mods that modify sexuality. Here's a well loved one - Psychology: https://ludeon.com/forums/index.php?topic=34112.0
@Prestophobia @pcgamer It's definitely something to be concerned about. I can see others devs reading that and just deciding to avoid the whole issue. It would be unfortunate if someone had to limit their creativity due to such concerns.
@snailtec Some day, of course (the future is many years long) but don't hold your breath. It was just released a few months ago.
@A_Soft_Rewind @pcgamer Hoping some day we'll all have more freedom to represent individuals as (messy, flawed) individuals, and not as idealized puppet-symbols for a belief system. But to make that happen, we'll need to change norms to be more understanding of differing individual perspectives.
@pcgamer @ELahti @SamMGreer @pcgamer has added a clarifying note. Considering how personally damaging false implications like this are, I wish they were never published. But I'm appreciative they addressed it relatively quickly.

A hard part of indie dev is that you don't have an organization around to correct you when you start slipping off the track. Indie devs, please pace yourself and take time to keep your mind healthy. There's a testing build of RimWorld on the Steam 'unstable' branch. It brings a way for mods to separately support multiple game versions, plus a few bugfixes. It should be compatible with 1.0 mods. Can anyone try it with a big mod list and let me know how it works?
@FG_squared Thanks FG - love the stream as always.
@MrFailface Brilliant, thanks!
@AleXandrYuZ Not in this update; trying to keep things minimal to avoid breaking.
@Sheenariel Huh, would you mind emailing me a tiny bit more about what you're seeing? [email protected] I'd love to know if it starts/stops working when you change to default/unstable branch. And what exactly you're seeing. And the output_log if possible! Many thanks if you can!
RimWorld is the @WIRED Recommendation of the Week. Pretty cool! Glad you liked it @juliemuncy23 https://www.wired.com/story/division-2-steam-epic-game-news/
@SilentSiren91 As much play as possible would be awesome. If you do hit a serious problem (that doesn't exist on the default branch) please do email me the log: [email protected]
@SilentSiren91 I don't know what you mean by "freezes" - could you send me your output_log via email?
@SilentSiren91 But it does ultimately load? Seems like it's probably churning out error messages in the background but I need the log to really investigate.
@SilentSiren91 Thanks for the feedback! Still looking for more info from anyone else who wants to try as well.
@cliffski Nah - they just move the target to the left :)
@SilentSiren91 Just updated the unstable branch, should fix issues with ModManager, let me know how it goes?
@sugarbeard @DirtyRectangles Is the event info written somewhere?
Any other game devs want to play PUBG in an hour or two?
@mablae PC
@DyalanBF It's a co-op game!
Updated build of RimWorld on the "unstable" Steam branch - can anyone confirm it works with Fluffy's ModManager mod? We're going for 100% mod compatibility with this update to 1.0.
@codeoptimist Thanks! Still looking for as much confirmation as I can get.
@JarMustard Congrats on the DICE awards nomination! Curious if you're going to the event?
@JarMustard Awesome! Still trying to figure out if I can go... hopefully I'll get to run into you there though. If not, later then.
@Sheenariel Thanks for the info!
@SilentSiren91 Received it. Breakages here are confusing, did you change anything else between last test and this one? It would be great if you could send your mod config file as well so we can get the exact same modlist (to reduce the list and try to find the single mod causing issues).
@SilentSiren91 OK thanks. If you open options menu and click "open config data folder" you can then find the mods config file. It lists all the mods that are active.
@SilentSiren91 I thought that might happen. Thanks, let me know!
@Sinvicta You know what's funny, I used to watch Husky videos every day long before starting RimWorld, and I remember he'd mention that Sinvicta helped get the games. And here we are. Small world eh. funny when people pop up again like that
@OldGroo Nope, never seen it before.
@OldGroo Thanks
Alright these RimWorld bases are getting nuts. The Biodome https://www.reddit.com/r/RimWorld/comments/agfe84/the_biodome/ http://pbs.twimg.com/media/DxAw6nOXgAE93Uv.jpg
@cliffski There's a weird norm that's arisen where people are actually proud that they don't know arguments they disagree with. As though being able to restate opposing views would be somehow dirty. Literal wilful ignorance in pursuit of ideological purity.
A new build is on steam 'unstable' branch. If anyone would try it and let me know how it works (especially with mods and non-English languages) I'd be very appreciative! Hopefully this is the final version. The main changes are some bugfixes and support for multi-version mods.
@PassTheSnapple Thanks, let me know!
@PassTheSnapple This kind of feedback is super useful.
My book is on iTunes! I love randomly discovering things like this. https://twitter.com/ituitems/status/1084774758942597120
@SpehsMahreen Thanks! This kind of feedback is essential.
When the OS tells me a program wants to access my contacts, calendar, camera, etc, there should be an option to allow access but supply fake data. So apps can't hold functionality hostage to harvest info they don't need but want to sell.
@esstender This was a bug in previous versions, but I thought we solved it. Are you sure your build is up to date?
@cliffski @georgeb3dr This may be overstating a little bit; most reviews I see online are earnest attempts to express something real and often helpful. It's not fair to say EVERY store's reviews are a cesspool of abuse.
@cliffski @georgeb3dr The issue is that either way you go on this has massive difficulties associated with it. One seems more pertinent because it's actual, but the problems with editing and censoring reviews (by who? and whose standards?) are endless. Total freedom at least treats each user equally.
No matter what I change my Twitter profile photo to it changes to a blank white circle. Anyone know how to fix it?
@BlissNein tech support reverse psychology
@cliffski @IonSwitz @georgeb3dr It's okay to be a softie but not to demand the world contort itself, denying freedom of expression to millions, to cater to the softie *without limit*. There must be a line past which we expect softies to use coping strategies. E.g. Don't read the reviews (like Jeff Vogel does).
@cliffski @IonSwitz @georgeb3dr I've definitely had serious negative emotional reactions to this style of feedback (including obvious physiological symptoms). Typically I cope by just not reading when it's not worth the emotional hit. I think every dev needs to learn to meter their feedback input.
Thanks for the suggestions everyone. It worked when I used Chrome.
@kanturk95 Thanks. It's from the cover of my book.
Just released a RimWorld technical update with multi-version mod support and a few critical bugfixes. Please let me know if there are any technical problems with it! https://ludeon.com/blog/2019/01/1-0-update-brings-multi-version-mod-support/
@SilentSiren91 Maybe we should rename it.
@pardeike Yeah, it's a good idea, we just didn't have time to do it safely before 1.0. So we did it this way.
@Good8adUgly You'd have to please email me about this. [email protected] You'd also need to correct the two spelling mistakes on the shirt :)
@SilentSiren91 All outlander settlements carry them, send a caravan to buy one.
@SilentSiren91 gonna add a training letter to make this clearer
@SilentSiren91 All outlander settlements should carry at least 1, 100% of the time (unless you bought them since last restock). If not there's a bug. Tribals don't always have them.
MOBA is the most redundant genre name ever. "Online" implies "Multiplayer". "Arena" implies "Battle". So we could just call it "Online Arena" without losing any meaning. But Arena is pretty close to implying Online anyway. So this genre should really be called "Arena".
@GameOnGardner How could I forget? Could reduce that to MORPG at least. Or just ORPG - are there any online RPGs that aren't massive?
@keoDotA That's really good, actually. Or maybe: Tactical RTS. An RTS with little or no economy mechanics.
@achebit Clearly it should be "OA" then!

@SammikinsRox @SwampCapitaine @AlistairLindsay Al sells it drm-free here! https://www.lasgameaudio.co.uk/store
@AlistairLindsay It anyone wants to buy it DRM-free, here's where you can get it: https://www.lasgameaudio.co.uk/store
Thanks for the interview @FutileDevises https://twitter.com/FutileDevises/status/1088768258348670976
@HomieKoyomi @indiegameweb That's what I thought too. I still think it could work, but in my prototyping time it didn't become too strong. I think I was overly influenced by worker placement board games at the time.
@ysalmi @indiegameweb You can actually play them if you buy RimWorld drm-free at http://rimworldgame.com ! I spent 1-2 months on each, and I re-used assets where possible. Bits of the merc game did make it into RimWorld, actually.

@Kamil29714795 We always review them before each update. So it would go in the game as soon as the game is updated. There is no fixed update schedule, but since 1.0 I'm trying to do it every 3-6 months.
@marvinkosh But starving disease-ridden wrecks are so entertaining!
@SilentSiren91 Likely related to mods I'm afraid... you'd want to post the output_log file if you need help.
@SilentSiren91 You're modding I assume? You'd want to post output_log. Ludeon forums are a good place for this
@bartwerf Was there an announcement or something recently?
@RoboB0b_ Thanks :)
@thatJaneNg I basically do this with poutine in every city I've lived in (though it doesn't really work outside Canada sadly). Mac+cheese sounds fun. You could just order every type online and try them all.
@thatJaneNg Curds is a really good sign! Never seen that outside Canada. You should give it a shot! Let us know if it's properly squeaky.
@LadyAllowyn Excellent to hear :)
A version of StarCraft but you're limited to a pool of clicks that increases at 1 click per second (up to a max of 10). Would probably be a lot more relaxing.
@sapinker It's not amazing. It's the only thing that deterred the USSR from invading Europe. NATO conventional forces could never have stopped them - but the threat to nuke their armies did (not nuke their cities - their armies). It may play a similar role in the future with China.
@Novbirovsk @sapinker Threat of conventional world war doesn't stop dictators if they think they will win. This should be clear given that the last world war was started by a dictator who thought he would win. (The USSR would have won conventional war in Europe; this isn't controversial AFAIK.)
@Novbirovsk @sapinker Well, they could've won a conventional war. They had more men, more planes, more tanks, more artillery, and the advantage of surprise. Of course I can't know what they were thinking; nobody can. I'm only saying the US nuclear doctrine isn't "amazing". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ZEGPQAOn7I
@Cataphract @sapinker Tying your own hands can enable forms of cooperation that wouldn't be possible otherwise.
@Novbirovsk @sapinker Nobody made the assertion that nukes "definitely" prevented a war. I'm just saying that if you consider the strategic situation, there are straightforward, non-amazing reasons to not have a "no-first-strike" doctrine.
@TheLibertonian @sapinker Thanks for adding information! To be clear: I'm not making the claim that "nukes deterred an invasion" that would've happened. I'm making the claim that it's not "amazing" NATO had a first-strike doctrine. At the time, they couldn't be sure what the Soviets were thinking.
@Novbirovsk @sapinker The tangible thing is: The NATO army was weaker. That's all. From NATO's point of view (not knowing Soviet intentions) the option of nuclear first strike was the logical reason they could feel secure in that situation. Hence it being part of doctrine.
@Novbirovsk @sapinker Again - the point is that it's not "amazing" that the US has a first strike doctrine. Again - they couldn't know the USSR's thinking at the time and it's irrelevant to the point. You seem to treat this like a game about naming logical fallacies. It's dull. Engage in good faith.
@urwumpe @Novbirovsk @sapinker I honestly think the only reason WW2 didn't reignite and continue to ~1955 was the Manhattan project.
@juliagalef Constructive discourse is *work*.
@AlanLevinovitz @jessesingal Danger: Seem like this could be an easy way to dismiss arguments. "You're just shouting in pain." -> acknowledge the emotions in order to ignore the logic (or whatever attempt at logic there is) without appearing openly oppositional.
@AlanLevinovitz @jessesingal It's worth understanding why someone is speaking. But stating their motivations is not a response to what they're saying (no matter how dumb their logic). That would be https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bulverism So basically you're right but this isn't something that should be used in discourse.
@AlanLevinovitz @jessesingal An airplane-fearing person screaming "I'm going to die!" is not "disguising" their pain as "other forms of discourse". That's physical distress over an immediate physical situation, not at all like what we were discussing. You're erasing the line between therapy and discourse.
@AlanLevinovitz @jessesingal Both your new examples are cases where you're obviously obligated to *help* the person, to alleviate present distress, with no broader argument in play. People try to feign this "helping" role in political discourse all the time. In that context it's 99% a bad faith ploy.

@SawyerFree RW practically contains a roleplaying system. Yeah I'd be interested if a competent dev wanted to make a paper RPG.
This is why indie devs should focus on doing something small and original. You are numerically incapable of making something as grand and refined as the big teams. They are numerically incapable of innovating like you. https://twitter.com/clairlemon/status/1095931122062512129
@JimmuArts Start making a game or mod. Any platform, any language, any engine. Doesn't matter. Just get making.
@paulg @EricRWeinstein There is no substitute for having a rich mental library of reference experiences - both failures and successes.
@sherjilozair Can ML models use the process of learning itself as a reward function? The system would, like a human, self-direct to the best learning opportunities: tasks which are not too easy, and not too hard.
@Rhopunzel I feel like I'm watching a man bite a dog. Can't wait to see what you're working on.
@TheSHEEEPJD It was quite small on initial release in 2013, and was successful back then. That version had ~10 man-months of work in it. Arguably it's still small given how few assets there are. We just try to be clever to get bang for our buck, gameplay-wise.

@cliffski Yes you can tell it's people LARPing because they want to stock up on Mad-Max-style goods to trade for food instead of, you know, food. If it was America ammo would be on the list too. Having some food socked away is always a good idea, for natural disasters if nothing else.
@notsomerryjane Haha awesome :) just found it after all all this time?

@rocket2guns @notch My mind is breaking trying to imagine the head/face/arm geometry here...
@notch Thanks! Terrified is good; it means you care :) The RimWorld social sim is honestly very simple. I think it only works because it's embedded in other storygen systems that give context. That and it offloads the work of interpretation to the player (apophenia).

@RyanGrasso94 The book is about game design; region system is really a techical thing.
@GameOnGardner In fairness, Hugh Jackman himself said he looked like shit as Wolverine in the first X-men movie.
@mode7games Why do you HAVE to make these one-shot subjective calls? You don't. eg Your ISP doesn't. This assumption is justifying arbitrary enforcement of the personal biases of whoever happens to have the whip hand. We should be trying to reduce the power of that person, not maximize it.
@residentJan @mode7games The same way your ISP, or the mail, or the phone company, or a bar where you can go and talk about whatever you want work.
@TheEggpie @mode7games Valve has a robust framework: The speech-related laws and precedents of the nations they operate in. That's what it means when they say illegal content is prohibited. Contrary to your last point, it's easier to define minimal, permissive rules than overbearing, restrictive ones.
@residentJan @mode7games The same way an ISP, or the mail, or the phone company, or a bar where you can go and talk with willing interlocutors about whatever you want all work.
@TheEggpie @mode7games Maybe you don't want it. But if it exists, *someone* wants it. That's what it means to be a free society and to have individual rights: You don't get to force others to conform to your preferences.
@TheEggpie @mode7games Uh, no
@TheEggpie @mode7games You seem to assume that one can only "be fine" with something, or ban it. But freedom and tolerance mean having a space between those: I disagree but it's not my place to use force. Without that space, society is an endless war for power; and only the victors can be free.
@TheEggpie @mode7games So no, I wouldn't "be fine" with it but I wouldn't be shapening the pitchforks to try to destroy it. I know they'd end up used on me some day. (That said, what you described might be lawbreaking if it contains calls to real-life violence.)
@TheEggpie @mode7games When companies get big enough they gain the power to use force to shape speech on a national or global scale. They can destroy you economically. Their influence cannot be escaped. Thus they gain the obligation to not misuse that power.
@TheEggpie @mode7games The same does not apply to an indie game studio or a mom&pop cake shop, because customers can go to alternative suppliers with no significant consequence. But there is no real alternative to Valve, Google, Apple, Facebook, Mastercard/Visa, PayPal, etc.
@TheEggpie @mode7games I think the megacorps should probably be broken up and/or regulated to protect the rights of citizens (privacy, free speech, non-deceptive practices, transparency, etc). But until we can get there, I'm just advocating that they should respect those rights without being forced.
@TheEggpie @mode7games "Emotional safety" is a phrase that makes no sense. Nobody's emotions are affected by a product they never interact with, and nobody will interact with this who doesn't search for it. There's no evidence that video game depictions cause real-life violence. Studied many times.
@TheEggpie @mode7games We already went over this; megacorporations can be powerful enough to violate rights very easily and without violence. But I'm not interested in circling so I'll say goodbye on this. Cheers.
@mode7games In no way is the game under discussion being "foregrounded". It's hidden from anyone who doesn't specifically search for it. I don't think Valve should be "taste makers" or "curators" either. They're good at technology, their job is to move data according to customer wishes.
@mode7games "The community" doesn't "ask". A miniscule group of loud recreational ragers demands. The vast, vast majority of Steam users don't know or care about this. Their goal is to satisfy their play preferences, not to prevent others from doing so.
@mode7games Yes, in one sense it is. (Related: I've considered the idea of Steam as an API only, with the "front page" functionality being offloaded to other companies who can compete freely to display/sort the games in the way their customers want. I'd love it if Valve would do that.)
@SpaceHavenGame @Kjep64 @Pete_Complete I'm only bitter at you because you misspelled the name of RimWorld in your Twitter bio! I kid I kid, Space Haven looks great. Glad to see your KS got off to such an explosive start.
@mode7games Anyone with power has a responsibility to not use it to do evil. Note that the #1 obligation is not "to do good", but "to not do evil". There's a difference! A behemoth crusading for goodness is dangerous. One wary of his own power, and doubtful of his judgment, is much safer.
@mode7games A system that is minimally restrictive and based on a more mature system (the law) has less edge cases by design. Less chances to do wrong. As opposed to making things up ad-hoc, in emotionally heated moments, without context or consistency, based on the outrage of the day.
@adamofgreyskull @cliffski @mode7games Murder is often unjustified too in games (and movies, books, etc). E.g. GTAV, top selling game of all time, basically about mass murdering people (often innocent people) to get money and power and women. E.g. Any crime movie
@mode7games @adamofgreyskull @cliffski You're right that neither of those is a good solution. Valve isn't doing either. Valve's solution is to lean on the centuries of accumulated wisdom in the law, by basically doing an #import from the law itself. An admirably humble approach imo
@mode7games @adamofgreyskull @cliffski You're sarcastic, but what you're saying is true. Laws that control speech to manipulate culture are very common. e.g. Places like China, Russia, Iran, Saudi, Cuba, NK today have very active speech control police with specific cultural goals they pursue by force.
@mode7games @adamofgreyskull @cliffski Beyond that it's hard to response since you're really vague about what you're really advocating or why. Corporations should seek to manipulate culture to good ends, I guess? Or someone's idea of good. Anyway I should go be productive so I'll have to leave this one, cheers.
"Veil of ignorance" is the thought experiment: What society would you want to live in if your social position was randomized? I suggest a similar thought experiment: What rules+norms would you want to live under, if the identity+beliefs of the power holders was randomized?

@paulsoaresjr Well, the ice sheet is like a kilometer-thick sheet of ice sitting on rock. So no ice fishing there. Sea ice, maybe, but I'm pretty sure permanent icecaps like the Arctic are too thick for ice fishing to be feasible. Like 2-3m thick.
@paulsoaresjr @sully9088 The real reason: Adding such a food source to the ice biomes would reduce the diversity in play experiences the game offers by making the biomes more alike - the opposite of what we want. Plus issues with UI complexity on the work screen from the new work type.
Impressive ship, impressive as hell mod. https://twitter.com/GarretSidzaka/status/1105331589611810816
@stargazystudios In the future, people will pay extra to make their software dumb.
@cliffski Once per decade seems pretty acceptable to me. Unless there's some more details left out here...?
@cliffski @RyanSumo You end up cross-banning people who were e.g. banned by an unprofessional dev for fair criticism of a game, or for personal reasons, or for whatever. I could see an opt-in explicit ban mirror arrangement between specific devs. I don't trust everyone on Steam Direct though.

@nikow I think qualifications are definitely critical for some fields (e.g. safety-related work like pilot, doctor, engineer), and near meaningless in others (anything you can learn safely at home like game dev, music, art).
@SanderDaviesC Team size averaged over time was probably a bit under 2.5.
@ChildishGiant Well, we released the final game in October. I recommend googling "rimworld update".
@MichaelCon1 My deadlift. Hit three plates recently! Having trouble getting past that, but I'm in no big hurry. :)
@OwenBurkard Not sure how that could be possible, programs can't hold memory after they're closed. It'd be helpful if you state exactly what you're seeing (with the understanding that we probably can't affect it since Unity handles all the OS interaction code anyway).
@TacoSt0rm If its possible to lift the stack with two separate cables separately or together, these would be the weights for each cable/both cables together.
@EmiliosManolid2 Never measured. In general pathfinding times are extremely situational so I don't think this could be answered in a number. We focus on problem cases.
@TacoSt0rm Then someone done fucked up.
@Hanky_Spanky_ @OwenBurkard That sounds really bizarre. I'm afraid I can't really do anything about it, though, since the operating system stuff is all handled by Unity. I've never heard such a report after 150,000,000+player hours, so I suspect it's specific to your machine somehow.
My interview with gamedesignlovers is up! https://gamedesignlovers.com/tynan-sylvester/
@Sephirdorf I definitely reflected back on it, but I never actually and went back and read it. Too many new useful things to read and learn!
@GameOnGardner Well it's easy to just render one object after the other without any Z-test (in fact it is the default). But then if the two intersect at all, or the second-drawn one is behind the first, the image draws wrong.
@mode7games @IanHardingham Should be "footybird", or "wingybird", since hands are analogous to birds' feet or wings. It's not "nailyman" after all
@GameOnGardner I'm describing a different problem that you just never ever see in shipping software, because Z-test solves it. Imagine a car 10 feet away and a truck 200 feet away. Imagine the truck drawing over top of the car when it should be hidden behind it.
@GameOnGardner It's tricky to explain without visual examples and a lot of words.
@evirae Glad you agree! And you are very welcome.
@taytayrmorton At first just me. After the Kickstarter I hired a programmer, and contracted an artist and musician. Later on went up to 3 programmers, but artist etc contracts had ended. I'd say average team count over time was 2.5
@mikeBithell Fun fact, Steven Soderbergh actually did direct a great film on an iPhone. Unsane.
@taytayrmorton I think there were 4 at once at some points.
@NumberOneAshe I really should sit down and work on the universe more. But it's hard! I'm some ways, harder than actual game design.
@nudelwalker Tilt your monitor 45 degrees. Isometric! But seriously - The game is top-down because -Nothing is ever occluded behind anything else -Many objects don't need multi-view graphics -Art is simpler -Tiles are easier to click Isometric could work but at a cost, not worth it imo
@kamil_dzida Good question. I'm thinking of pushing an update pretty soon, it's been a few months.
@Saldric101 Not quite 400 times a day but yeah, when there's something to announce I'll definitely announce it! But not quite yet.
@SnuttiTutti I was thinking I'd pull a Microsoft and skip to RimWorld 10.
I respect anyone who engages in a debate on pretty much anything. Not name-calling - real engagement. Whether you're right or wrong, a sincere attempt to make points, listen, and respond strengthens our social rationality, intellectual humility, and shared humanity.
What dog breed do you want to see in RimWorld? (poll just for fun, this is not a promise!)
@Kamil29714795 Sure, just email me please with the name. [email protected]
@Banlish Even if you're not willing to change your views! Simply making the effort to disprove to what someone is *actually saying* is enough for valuable conversation. Not name-calling, straw-manning, shaming, stigmatizing, or guilt by association. Actually responding to what's said.
@FoxCurtailed @LudeonStudios Thank you! I should get you to produce a new trailer or something. With some entertaining deadpan voiceover.
@NotAWiz4rd The appendix has suggestions!
I've just pushed an update to RimWorld in Steam. Code is all the same; language data and player-created backstories are updated. New version is 1.0.2231. Please let me know if there's any issue! If all is good, I'll be updating the DRM-free version soon.
@Idonotbow2sheep yes http://rimworldgame.com
Help me list more games in the "two-stage short-play permadeath roguelike" genre: FTL Slay the Spire The Binding of Isaac Into the Breach Convoy What else is worth playing in this category?
@_ActualAli Played it - fun, but it's not a two-stage roguelike and it's not single-player.
@marcusround There's an overmap where you choose encounters or where to go, and then there's an encounter screen.
@MaskedGikame Great games! But not really the same thing; these are games where you travel around a big map killing things, I'm looking for the two-stage structure with overmap and encounters that last 20-180 seconds.
To clarify, I'm not just interested in any roguelike game, but specifically ones with the two-stage structure. World map Encounter map Rapid alternation between.
@Cataphract Good one! Nice and old. I also thought of Jagged Alliance 2, though it's not exactly rapid and it's not really permadeath.
@botchkuck Very true, good call.
@sanafreemanart Thanks! Good non-obvious ones here.
@TheCodeDragon1 @LudeonStudios Can you be a bit more specific on exactly what you mean? Does this include short term contractors? Inspirers? Supportive family?
@TheCodeDragon1 @LudeonStudios Well I mean the full list is really in the RimWorld credits.
Great film: Every frame's a painting. Great game: Every moment's a puzzle.
@Cataphract Yes, of course.
@SpaceHavenGame Huge congrats on this guys! Glad to see Kickstarter still works; you earned significantly more than RimWorld did for our opening KS campaign.
@NotAWiz4rd FTL, SC2, Super Meat Boy, Portal series, Counter-Strike, Factorio, Left 4 Dead series. I did find Slay the Spire recently, which is awesome.
Just got to play @ProdeusGame by my old Irrational friend @generalvivi There's nothing like pure 90's style action fun. This was a great time. They're still running their Kickstarter: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/prodeus/prodeus
@LourenoVieira2 You probably turned it off in the options menu.
@NerevarRising It's the RimWorld ending song, made just for the game by @AlistairLindsay
@thatJaneNg Damn. Now I'm really glad I visited a few years ago.
I can't believe @SamsungMobile is still pushing this obscene Bixby garbage on me. I had it disabled. Now it updated and it demands that I install it, with pages of legalse agreements, before I can disable it. I will never buy a Samsung phone again just because of this.
@McMullinRC @KelboEdwards @SamsungMobile Unfortunately there is not a way, not any more. That's the problem. The Bixby key is now permanently an "install bloatware" key.
@overhaze Not without a LOT of work. The whole thing is built on Unity's original immediate-mode GUI framework; we'd have to completely reimplement the entire UI to get off that unfortunately. That's more of a sequel thing than an update thing...
@stuckbug So you named the game after a drink, makes sense now!
@starplatinum84 @SamsungMobile Please link me to how I can do this without signing pages of legalese!
@Rhopunzel M14, good choice.
@starplatinum84 @SamsungMobile Doesn't work I'm afraid. "The Bixby key setting isn't available yet. Sign in to Bixby to start using the Bixby key." It literally forces me to sign up to their crap to be able to turn off their crap. No.
@MetalUndivided I actually wrote it before I read AFUTD! So it's coincidence. I think there's a lot of cross-pollination in hard sf though.
Great list of games here! And I'm extremely honored that @indiegameweb chose RimWorld as No. 1. https://twitter.com/indiegameweb/status/1119571534719352832
@direGoldfish @cliffski @danctheduck True, but you don't have to choose randomly. Focus on learning from people who have succeeded at relevant work, ignore those who haven't. I guess it does require slightly more effort to filter this way. Maybe we need 'steam curators for game dev videos'.
Reading Dan Simmons' "Carrion Comfort". The book's main part is set in "the present" of 1980, with historical sections set in 1942. I just realized that 1942 is actually closer to 1980 than we are now. And yet it doesn't feel that way. Time runs.
@DrCrypt Only partway through. It's compelling but not amazingly deep or thought-provoking (yet).
@schoos76 Well I wasn't there for 1980, but it still feels kind of familiar. I think the big thing is probably just that the world changed more from 42-80 than 80-now. In 42 there was a giant world war with millions dying.
@DrCrypt I remember Hyperion being more profound - but I was a lot younger when I read it.
@schoos76 I actually don't agree, I think the changes from 42 to 80 were much more impactful. Accessible jet travel, television, nuclear weapons and power, refrigerators and washing machines, personal air conditioning, various vaccines and medical advances...
Screenshots from my mercenary management sim, December 17 2012. The code behind this was later re-used for Starship Architect prototypes, which evolved into Eclipse Colony and then RimWorld. It's charming to note that some of this code is still running in RimWorld today. http://pbs.twimg.com/media/D4tuFOlXsAcLtuP.jpg
@idewla We redid the art but the concept remains.
I just noticed that this prototype was also made after my failed magic school simulator prototype. You can see I kept using the graphics for the students' desks in the room near the bottom.
@erick_avalos915 @RyanSumo's Academia School Simulator is along the same lines as my original design, give it a try.

@FoodRelatedName A very solid interpretation of my very questionable art!
@NumberOneAshe I'd consider changing it for sure. I didn't want there to be too many fiddly bits in the game - super rare-use items that are useless most of the time.

Played Obra Dinn from @dukope. First time I've seen a narrative deduction game that actually worked. It's a Dune 2 moment. There's clearly a whole genre of games hidden here, waiting to be created.
@dukope Also fun to imagine creating such a game without a computer at all. Imagine a book of letters, photos, diaries, and other documents, together with a list of fill-in questions to answer, requiring close observation, deduction, and combination of knowledge to complete.
@thisisbossi @dukope It's such an obvious idea I feel it must have been done. House of Leaves got partway there, but didn't have any explicit questions to answer.
@zer0sumGames @dukope Intriguing, I should investigate.
@KelseyLRains @Rhopunzel I'm currently freaking out that someone got a tattoo based on an animal from a video game I made... so I guess we're even.
@nektoplasma @dukope @DigiAntiquarian Great find!
@cliffski Success breeds opposition I guess? But yeah developing RimWorld is pretty great.
@Thiccolas_123 Unlikely because of how it distorts player motivation and how easy it is to fake with mods or save editing.
This is basically the foundation of my game design method: Collective a massive number of ideas over months and years. Then bubble-sort them by doing repeated side-by-side comparisons. The best ideas float to the top over time. https://twitter.com/paulg/status/1123665034817757184
@FmrPlays Gigantic Google doc. I've currently got like 250+ pages of ideas (various projects included). Many of these are one-liners. Some are fleshed out sections with details and analysis and implementation plans.
@TheRealSpoonDog Yeah that happens to me too sometimes. PS: Nice to see a fellow UT mapper all these years later :)
@kinrany Being honest, it's not strictly bubble sort. It's an intuitive process of comparison and reordering. Categorization is a great question. I do categorize in some cases (e.g. weapons list) while other ideas go in a big pot. Unrelated ideas can be compared via cost/benefit.
@Thalyd The containers are all from mods, so you'd have to ask the mod authors about that. Base game doesn't have containers.
@CohhCarnage Will Florida Man be there though?
@TheDode3 Thanks for buying the book! I'm afraid I haven't announced any future work, but we are working on something over here.
@RagnarRokh @TheDode3 This isn't a threading problem; most likely some mod is creating some repeated errors every frame which causes massive slowdown. It's not a fine-grained optimization problem requiring extreme multithreading as a solution - it's just a bug the modder should fix.
@thisistherevolt @JeremyPenter You're so kind :) Enjoy.
@RouvellatT @TheDode3 Means a lot to hear that.
@RagnarRokh @TheDode3 Maybe no errors. Could just be old-fashioned unoptimized code hitting a worst-case situation. There's lots of ways to trash performance without realizing it.
I made a simple data language which makes it easy to write and edit things like creature/weapon/terrain types. It's now open-sourced under MIT license: https://github.com/tyd-lang/TyD A C# implementation: https://github.com/tyd-lang/TyDSharp Hope someone can get some use out of it!
This isn't related to RimWorld in any way (RW uses XML, which works but isn't optimal since it's not specifically designed for this kind of data.) The TyD language is basically what I wish I had when making RimWorld.
@Zachary_Hereygs If I made another game of any type I'd use this, I think.
@EikeSteinchen LUA is much heavier and easy to screw up with. TyD is focused on a specific task and it's harder to make mistakes. It would seem wasteful to include an entire LUA interpreter just to e.g. read a simple user-config file. TyD also has cleaner syntax.
@Ristellise That would be awesome! I can't write any Python myself.
@SilentSiren91 That's awesome. Let me know how it goes! We came up with a nice "def" system in RimWorld (which read from XML). Worked great for us and modders. Maybe I'll open-source the def system too some day. Since as far as I can tell every dev is reinventing this wheel for every game.
@Ristellise Lol TyDPy would seem most similar to TyDSharp.
@Omegatani Unity is a game engine we use. XML is a file format we also use (one of many).
@Neurosis_44 A JSON version of a language designed to overcome the shortcomings of JSON?
@My_EVE_Online It's 2 records. Semicolon divides records, so you can place several on one line if you like. Essential for short lists of short items. I chose semicolon over comma since comma is used in some numerical data (German, or vectors) and semicolon is more visible.
@Mytweetismyown I thought of it, but probably not any time soon. The changeover would be rough with all the mods having to update. We'd also have to reimplement some things that don't exist in TyD yet, like patches.
@tanyaxshort I think it's worth considering why this pattern occurs so often. It reminds me of many of @robinhanson 's "X isn't about what it's supposed to be about" aphorisms. Indie marketing isn't about increasing sales or review scores, it's about seeking social validation from peers.
@tanyaxshort @robinhanson Just watching a sales number go up (if it even does that) doesn't satisfy the monkey brain. The monkey brain wants to have 20 people you recognize acknowledge your work. It explains a lot of the nonsensical decisions devs make about how to allocate their scarce time and energy.
@tanyaxshort @robinhanson e.g. Spending weeks and thousands of dollars to personally exhibit to 200 people at a con is an absurd waste given you can easily reach 20,000 with a cheap Youtube vid. Yet people keep doing it because they crave the personal validation.
@tanyaxshort @robinhanson Of course it's fine to seek validation; it's a basic human need. I only think it's a problem if the influence of this need isn't consciously acknowledged. Acting in service of hidden urges while inventing rationalizations - this is not a recipe for optimal decision-making.
@My_EVE_Online Yes it's fine (designed this was on purpose). Semicolon and newline end string records, and it's allowed to have multiple record ends in a row (they're just ignored). Specifically designed this way! Though the spec should be more explicit I think.
@thatJaneNg clearly you should eat more mac and cheese to see if it makes you feel better
@SoftwareIncGame Thanks for open-sourcing it! You're right, I really should have the original in a lower version of C# for compatibility.
@SoftwareIncGame Yeah, new => C# code is so pretty compared to the {{{old{code}}}}. I just wish you'd put the downgrade in one commit so I could merge it! But it looks like someone else also forked and downgraded so maybe I can merge theirs.
@cnanodd @SoftwareIncGame I'm so... sorry? :D
@SoftwareIncGame I'm on VSCode over here. But thanks I didn't know that.
@SoftwareIncGame I'm actually planning to cut the class attribute and leave the other, inheritance-related attributes hardcoded. So atts are only handle/source/abstract. On reconsideration, I think likely anything you can do with arbitrary attributes is better done by just using child nodes.
@SoftwareIncGame You may be able to replace custom attributes with special-case child nodes with reserved names. E.g. just have some special code to handle child nodes named "optional". It's what I'm doing with "class", works great.
@SoftwareIncGame Damn you're right, it would need a value. Having to write "optional true" a thousand times would be lame. For name collisions my trick is just to use the name "class". It's a C# reserved word :)
@SoftwareIncGame I guess I don't know the project so I couldn't say. Some projects have a lot of data, though.
Someone please try this! I suspect it's better than the in-game version. https://twitter.com/MedlandSlater/status/1127830164602122240
@SoftwareIncGame :D Btw I updated spec and TyDSharp to 0.2.0 yesterday. No more class attribute.
@SoftwareIncGame Well in my usage, the root table names indicate the type of def being defined. So they aren't unique. In general, it's expected people would use the record names in various ways, often in ways that would violate uniqueness.
@rocket2guns @SoftwareIncGame Thanks Dean, please go ahead and use it if you like!
@Toastmold Ridiculous. I like it.
@GaelRenoux Thanks! I've never seen this. Wish I did before. I'll definitely be revieweing it to see if there's anything I can learn (and/or if I can use this instead of making my own).
@Andrew_Harper97 I've never seen this issue, is it reproducible without mods? I'd suggest using dev mode and/or checking the log to see if errors are being thrown.
@PeterSauter12 Lots of great games are made by one person. This sounds like an absolutely bizarre piece of advice considering the counter-examples are so numerous and easy to find. I made RW's Kickstarter version alone.
@SuperNerdMike That's awesome to hear! It was a variety of optimizations, implemented by our hotshot coder Kenneth.
@neceros Sounds like some sort of bug or broken mod interaction - in the base game gourmand won't go nearly that far.
@Featherbeard Sorry, I really have no idea why that would happen. Sorry!
@Neggy011 Never heard of such a thing. Sometimes verify fails. I recommend you unsub from all mods, manually delete all mod files, manually delete RimWorld install folder, and reinstall from scratch.
@Neggy011 Sometimes people have problems just with base game mis-installs. Steam isn't perfect. If you posted your log file it would help too.
My interview on Uses This is up :) https://usesthis.com/interviews/tynan.sylvester/
@shyteagames I just use the basic extensions for languages/engines I'm working with.
@CosmicMenace It's a task list, definitely. Defining a task is basically the same as writing a design, so it's also a list of designs. Here's a random page from the old RimWorld list. There are ~200 more pages like this - the vast majority of ideas never get implemented. So *not a promise*. http://pbs.twimg.com/media/D7QINoXUEAApQtH.png
@SoftwareIncGame Perhaps you have some interest/comments. Not pushing this really hard but it's something I need to figure out sooner or later. https://github.com/tyd-lang/TyD/blob/master/Proposal-patches.md
@CosmicMenace Write it down as a concept, with a note in red text: "Flesh this out" The task is to investigate, flesh out, and re-evaluate the concept. I do this workflow all the time.
@GameOnGardner As the others have noted - season 1 and to some extent season 2 are pretty goofy at times. Lots of paper mache rocks. Stick it out, S3 to the end are some of the best television ever.
@ScottTRichmond I'm not aware of any spike?
@ScottTRichmond Individual countries can sometimes show random jumps due to small sample size. I don't see anything big happening over here. https://steamdb.info/app/294100/graphs/
@BurdenOfCommand @GrueGoblin @aJimHolmes @keithburgun @jesseschell What a perfect image :) You even caught it during a ridiculous rat attack.
@KailanWalker I'm afraid there's no giant central list.
@BurdenOfCommand @GrueGoblin @aJimHolmes @keithburgun @jesseschell @stackedboxes Well, good taste in images then :)
Collecting reference to help improve the design of patching for TyD data language (https://github.com/tyd-lang/TyD). Can anyone point me to a RimWorld mod that makes heavy use of XML patching? I want to see the usage patterns to know how we can improve on the data language.
@Srekel Thanks. Const/formula/range safety are all actually different ways of handling the string leaf nodes' data, which TyD doesn't do at all. So you can totally do all these with the existing TyD spec; you'd just have to write them yourself. Good ideas for the spec too, though.
@Srekel I'll consider cutting to \n. I do like the simplicity, though it makes things like user editing potentially problematic if the parser is super pedantic about this.
Small RimWorld update is live on Steam beta branch, build 1.0.2282. -Localizations and player content updated -Optimizations to loading code Should be compatible with everything except ModCheck mod, please let me know if there's a problem! Hoping to set this on default branch.
@G4MR No. Considering the varying definitions of 'work' and the varied usage patterns for mods I don't think it's feasible.
Sorry forgot to mention. It's on Steam branch 'unstable'.
@zarkonnen_com It's never too late :)
RimWorld update 1.0.2282 has been released to the main Steam branch and for DRM-free download. Mainly, this update optimizes load times. Loading should be *much* faster, especially with a lot of mods. Blog post: https://steamcommunity.com/games/294100/announcements/detail/1603758062184130450

@BurdenOfCommand @isoepodcast Glad you got something out of it :) It's something I picked up from @levine a while ago. That guy consumes the most unique source material; he couldn't have made unique games like BioShock by reading the same source material as everyone else. Go weird and deep.

@cilvet94 Just looked it up, these sound hilarious and a tiny bit RW-y.
@AlexanderHell89 If the seed handling has changed, it's impossible to get it back. Butterfly effect.
It's a problem if an indie game dev loves any one part of the process too much. You end up working on your favorite part all the time, instead of working on the part the game needs most. You have to love the creation process as a whole, not any particular kind of task.
@Shazeio7 Thanks :) Not sure if you meant me, but I haven't worked alone since 2013; gotta lay credit where it's due
@GregorKoomey I wish I could be in such good shape, sadly not quite
@GulaGames This is a massive issue. People get emotional rewards from work they like doing; this conceals the fact that it's not the work that needs doing. Seen many many indie devs waste years this way.
@henryyoung720 Honestly, designing it. But I enjoy doing code and art too. I like the whole thing really.... and maybe that's intentional. Except tax work. Hate tax work.

@hashtagsbyNoah No, but "bad luck" is a feature that everyone gets :)
@KuuHaKu_OtgmZ Classic mod, I know it. That is a form of Z-level which skips most of the challenges and opportunities of doing it full DF/Minecraft style. A worthwhile idea but not quite "z-levels", more like teleporting to another map.

@BerboLIVE Turn on category mode, it's in the bottom right. No mod needed.
@BurdenOfCommand @haikus_by_KN Yeah I've looked at these kinds of abstract modeling tools in the past and found them pretty useless. Real game systems which are interesting enough to be worth playing have so many non-modelable aspects that the abstraction can't predict anything useful about them.
@BurdenOfCommand @haikus_by_KN It's the wrong place to spend mental effort. We should be thinking about how players will percieve, pace, and feel about the game, not about how it exists as some sort of abstract system in a mathematical vacuum.
@JacKeown Nothing wrong with writing a story, if that's the task at hand. However you're hiring a game designer, not a writer. Presumably the task at hand is to design games. Slipping into story mode unprompted indicates and inability to think about mechanics and systems.

@122ddd2223d @KuuHaKu_OtgmZ Both, plus market differentiation. Of course dev simplicity isn't a goal itself, it's just a way to directing dev resources to their best use.
@IntuitiveLB @gamepressurecom @Bay12Games Appreciated, but it's a simple mistake and nothing damaging or intentional. Let's cut them a bit of slack and save the censure for where it's deserved.
@gamepressurecom @Bay12Games Awesome thanks, glad you enjoyed it :) Release date was November 4 2013 for the original DRM-free early access, though the final release was October 18 2018. Release dates are such a complex concept these days...
@webdevMason @CentralUnplan @patio11 Availability bias. People are extremely lazy, cognitively speaking. I just pushed an update to RimWorld's player-created content and localizations. It's on Steam's 'unstable' branch. No code changes. Should be totally compatible with savegames and mods. Can anyone give it a try and let me know if anything breaks? Ideally trying with many mods.

@besubtropical I hesitate to give any advice because I really don't know your specific situation. It's good you're reading the book though! You can play those prototypes if you buy RimWorld DRM-free though :) I think there are YouTube videos of them too.
@besubtropical For an example of a game MVP, compare RimWorld 1.0 with the Kickstarter version released in 2013. The concept of MVP applies very well to games and is the fulcrum of a development process.

@DanStapleton They don't need to be fun in the giddy lighthearted sense, I think, but they need to be compelling. I think the TV show comparison is better than movies. The Wire is like 50 hours, and few would call it 'fun'... but it's compelling and bingeable.

@Sinvicta It's funny, I remember years ago I used to watch HuskyStarcraft and he would mention your role in getting the replays for him to cast. Strange the things that stick in your head, and it's a small world. Cheers.
@jwiechers @patio11 Interesting, bureaucracy *is* algorithms, except executed by mindless paper-pushing humans instead of silicon. Bureaucracy can't flex to accomodate human-world exceptions, the same way silicon algorithms can't. That's why it's been hated for so long.
@neceros Secret :)
@schillingc @cliffski I don't agree with what Cliff said, but I think it's also fair to say the reactions were more aggressive and numerous than necessary. Tons of people piling on without adding any new thoughts.
@schillingc @cliffski There are some tweets in there, including from blue-checkmarked people with professional status, which openly express enjoyment at Cliff's distress.
@mode7games Yes but if I choose to believe he does, then I can justify (to myself) being an asshole to him, and being an asshole is such an enjoyable emotional release! I can't get back at my high school bully or jerk boss but this is the only substitute I have!
@schillingc @cliffski My point was not about distress caused, but distress gleefully celebrated.
@schillingc @cliffski I don't disagree to most of this, though I'm not sure how you know the original tweet was *wilfully* misleading and not just mistaken? Principle of charity suggests you should assume an error first, not malice. Another, more glib aphorism also says this.
@schillingc @cliffski I can imagine someone flipping back to a tab in that position (having forgotton most of the page content after opening it hours earlier), seeing that image, being struck by it, and tweeting it too fast/without thinking. I think we should be slow to infer evil motives.
@GreyAlien Copying and pasting XML data into different files. Oh, I also replied to an email!
@Rhopunzel I just love the fact that you own a truck
@Tenshi3 sorry that stuff is all on the Unity side :/
@quill18 So then, does that mean that a few months after that, the guards of the guards will also be charged and commit suicide? Then the guards of the guards of the guards? It's going to consume us all!
@Andrew_Harper97 Considered and decided against. It would distort player motivation towards metrics and away from stories (which inherently cannot be captured in metrics). This would harm the game.
Gamedev tool makers focus too much on making easy things easier, which often ends up making hard things harder. They're perversely incentivized to optimize for onstage demo impressiveness instead of real developer productivity over full dev cycles.
@GridSageGames This looks cool, and props for the old.reddit link :)
@AlexanderBirke I think that's a perfect example you just gave.

@jsalsman @ColonizeTitan No thanks!
@nikow I have a general policy of not speculating about future developments one way or the other. It saves a lot of heartache.
@petrring It appears to be borked for some Catalina users since Apple pushed the update. There will be a RW update which I hope will fix the issue, but there's no release date for it yet. More discussion here: https://ludeon.com/forums/index.php?topic=49609.0
@maximininator Thanks, I think it's been deleted though? Which is good because it's 100% fake.
@maximininator I appreciate them reporting it!
@a_man_in_black Funny thing is I also hate games that are compelling but not rewarding. I think it's kind of a skeezy way to design a game. I tried really hard to make RW work on both levels by leaving players with rewarding personal stories. Though it obviously didn't work in your case :(
@a_man_in_black You could try the peaceful mode though, it's totally legit to just like building stuff and lots of players use it. Just a thought!
@a_man_in_black Yeah, if it's *always* tense that would be a real pacing problem. Cassandra is designed to have a tight tension-relax cycle. So is Phoebe, except with a longer relax period. You could try Phoebe if you're not already. The challenges are as tough but the pacing is more open.
@a_man_in_black I wonder if there's a way the game can solve this kind of problem more automatically. Will have to think about it and watch for other players with similar issues.
@a_man_in_black Hmm. Clearly something complex is happening here... I appreciate the rich explanation either way.

@tanyaxshort Sometimes I've thought about the number of hours players put into a game. On some level it's a success to make a game people play for hundreds or thousands of hours. But I'm not sure it's really good for someone to play one game so long. Hard to say what to do about that though.
RimWorld streamers find amazing ways to spread the Christmas spirit. https://twitter.com/BelannaerTV/status/1206723308277747712
@jan_cieslar @tanyaxshort I agree, nothing wrong with long-term healthy consumption, especially if there's community or learning involved. It can get more extreme than that though (sometimes).

@Rhopunzel Honestly it's nice to see someone moving from idea to development to something playable at a decent human pace. So many projects just stretch out forever. Including some of mine.
@XMakss They'll attack a few times if they see you go through the door. This is a carefully-designed and tuned response to de-incentivize some really boring but previously-optimal door-peeking strategies.
@CortellHugo It would have opened a sort of game encyclopedia, similar to Civilopedia.
@GameOnGardner Couldn't agree more. Tools - choosing them, learning them, making them - often become more of a burden than they're worth. They distract from the fundamental creative goal. Though sometimes I think that's the point... It's easier to noodle on tools than push creative risk.
@Jonathan_Blow I think it largely comes from how people learn about opposing views. They don't listen to the opposing view from its source. They listen to what the people they agree with say about the opposing view.
@lazerbear Nope, you still can! http://rimworldgame.com/creative

@Bigugandanchun1 The same.
@GravelordNeato W is watts, d stands for days. Watt-days. In real life energy is commonly measured in kWh - kilowatt hours. 1000 times less than this is Wh. 24 times this is Wd. kWh didn't fit easily in the game scale, Wd was more natural.
@Rhopunzel Ooh ooh I know how to do this one!

@Rhopunzel Believe it or not it happened with the RW characters too. Yes, just those little armless, legless capsule-people.
@Robpsychobob It's French for 'grated'!
@Robpsychobob @Edvoli Nah it's just assembled from random syllables.
@matttwood It wasn't about the game itself, it was about statements he made. Don't know the quote but having seen this many times it was likely some sentiment along the lines of 'if you don't agree with $current_year_political_shibboleth, fuck you, don't play my game'.
@matttwood This is also one of those stories where you probably want to bypass the media and go to the primary sources. They're easily available and the media's not going to play this one even-handed.
The most important thing in game design is not to get good at executing tasks; it is to get good at selecting tasks.
@CosmicMenace My personal task list is fully integrated across all life domains. For better or worse.
I like to consider the specific task I'm doing compared to all the thousands of things I could be working on. Considering the number of choices, the thing I'm doing is almost certainly not the best use of my time.
@Alshenso Just start following coding tutorials to make a simple game. As many hours every day as possible, and don't stop. Time on task beats everything.
@jadziaxirl Oh I'm not stressed, just reflecting on how task selection works.
@realdude19 I'm not anxious, sorry if I gave that impression. Just thinking about task selection and how important it is/how it can be improved.
@Haunted_Backlog I disagree.
@webdevMason @yashkaf This is a bit Palpatine-y. I think it's probably a lot simpler - people looking for an easy, provocative take that draws discussion and thus traffic. They're just tryin to get to the end of the month, not concocting a years-long credibility domination plan.
Looks like @AlistairLindsay's RimWorld soundtrack is a top seller in the Steam Sountrack Sale - congrats Al! https://twitter.com/Steam/status/1227293809559531520
Games can't use a Hollywood-like market for screenplays or 'design documents'. It doesn't work. What might work is a market in storyworlds. A lot of games would be improved if they started from a 300-page worldbuilding bible. And they could be written design-agnostically.
@GreyAlien @charlesgoatley @sergiogarces It's a pretty powerful argument IMO. There are more people making more money than before. There are more 'success slots' to claim. Thus the average human's chance of being a successful indie dev has increased.
@GreyAlien @charlesgoatley @sergiogarces It used to be that people were mostly prevented from succeeding by gatekeepers like Steam. Now they're fail because customers just aren't interested in their work. The second one is more psychologically challenging, but not necessarily worse.

@MrTophat444 I'm evil, I know!
@MrTophat444 Brrainz said he was able to update Zombies from 1.0 to 1.1 in 3 hours or so, which I'm hoping indicates that updates will be relatively quick. We tried not to change anything unnecessary (and a lot of groundwork was done in 1.0 to make it possible).
@MrTophat444 Yeah I'm not sure how much you're doing with verbs and weapons. Some of that was refactored somewhat, hard to predict the impact.
@Procyon_Procyon I can't recall exactly; either 1.1 is better or they're the same.
I've just pushed a compatibility update to RimWorld version 1.0. It removes the spurious errors that 1.0 creates when reading mod metadata (About.xml) written for 1.1. The new version is 1.0.2548.
I seem to be unable to post a Steam announcement about it - Steam is bugging out. I will post one when I can.
@DaniAngione huh, didn't know that was a thing

@erikkain Censorship is about preventing discussions between others. "I won't let you say this message to other people." If you just hate a product for your own lack of enjoyment, that's not censorship. These can be (deliberately) conflated but if you care they're not hard to separate.

If anyone would sanity check it with a beefy mod list and let me know if it still works that'd be great.
@pudgerro Anything over a handful would be good. Invasive code mods like combat extended, etc.
@Fuzzel_ Restart Steam to make it notice
@Fuzzel_ Those ones are correct, 'supportedGameVersions' is actually obsolete and modders should change to 'supportedVersions'.
@pudgerro looks awesome to me, thanks!
I've been getting sporadic reports that the fix to RimWorld 1.0 (currently version 1.0.2551) broke some mods. Can anyone confirm that the current default Steam branch version works or does not work with mods?
Thanks for the replies everyone. Based on the report patterns (issues appearing and then disappearing hours or a day later) it sounds like some mods may be updating incorrectly and breaking games until they're fixed.

Available DRM-free at https://rimworldgame.com/royalty
@ConfoosdRaccoon I'm not against expansions if they expand the game meaningfully, and the original game stands well alone. We tried to hit a balance between making new experiences and retaining the RimWorld-ness of the base game.
@KappeiY Yes, you can activate or deactivate it entirely in-game (before starting a new game). During play you can also opt in or out of royal title rewards for quests. If you opt out you get other rewards instead. Or you can fight the Empire if you wish.
@EJTHANSEN Where did you buy it? Where does the error appear?
@ZaltheraxGaming You could buy DRM-free but you need to wait a few days for the Steam access registry for it to be set up. If you want to play right now you'd have to buy on Steam I'm afraid.
@galffy Yes we do :) A good chunk extra
@pocket_caribou Absolutely. You can also opt out of the royal title progression but still keep the Empire and quests. Or you can fight the Empire.
@EJTHANSEN Sorry about that, it's fixed now.
@rai_sin_san Sorry about that, it's been fixed. My apologies.
Wow! RimWorld - Royalty is currently the top global seller on Steam! Thank you everyone. http://pbs.twimg.com/media/ERjASwsUwAQT2oL.jpg
@Krieg_Blackpaw That's amazing and I appreciate it :) I don't want to let you down.
@JeDsLair @galffy It will, but we need a couple days to get the steam key registration system to handle Royalty.
@NerevarRising Feeling is mutual!
@RagnarRokh I'm not against multithreading but bear in mind the reason RW colonies are small isn't CPU performance, it's so that you can get to know your colonists and they don't just become ants. Think of it like a party-based RPG, 20 members is too many for the story.
@quill18 @DChuhay I swear I wasn't consciously thinking about these, but they're clearly in my head and I can't get them out!
@NunoFgl yes it will
@Rangutang I recommend starting a new to keep the progression aligned. But it will work either way.

@markwjansen @smd2008 Not a big TV person; I'm usually watching RW streams instead....
@sweptvevo I'm not clear on what you would prefer I do. Hiring people and paying them for their work is bad now? If the devs of any MP mod want to apply I'd consider them very strongly.
@AnonInOC @RagnarRokh They still interact so it's not easy at all, plus that doesn't solve the perf issues people have which are usually on one heavily-modded mega colony.
@GrizzMaeko The quest should still work with the new stellarch (we looked at this case specifically), but yeah we should look at updating the quest text.
@ArtemBelov1530 Fixed for hotfix build. Thanks!

@LiakosAbram Mods are great, but they really can't come close to replacing Royalty. Past the most superficial levels, they all do different things in different ways.
@Pussyboi_ Here you go https://twitter.com/TynanSylvester/status/1232591388924989442
@TruGunschlinger Definitely want to support modders; we rarely integrate mods directly though.
@GOGcom I mistook the date. It is March 3, but that's Tuesday (not Monday).
@Yesersir Holy crap did you take a quest to make that happen?
@scottreismanis @GOGcom @modiohq Does it support separating mods into different versions and matching those to game version automatically? That's the big issue I have with Steam.
@Pussyboi_ We were discussing it before :)
@BlindFox455 @AdriaBravoo Honestly I'm always reluctant to talk about the future because I feel like I'm guessing. It's sort of a general policy.
@scottreismanis @GOGcom @modiohq Basically I seek a system that can store multiple versions of each mod, matched to game versions. When a player plays the game, the system would load the files for all mods from the current game's version. This means when we update, the old version still works.
@silibisi Awesome!
@greg_logan You get DRM-free and you can register the game on your Steam account as well.
@XzVIfloeDrqaIod @GOGcom I hope next week for the basics.

@CompanionCube22 It is the background if you have the DLC :D
@mrmattswan First report of this issue I've seen. I have to say it still sounds like a broken file/broken mod issue, so you may not have deleted everything. That's not the kind of bug that would go unnoticed.
@sweptvevo Offer appreciated, but please bear in mind nobody said this was RimWorld-related at all. We have other project(s). Ignoring that, there are legal and technical issues about integrating mods regardless of quality. In any case as I said, happy to take applications.
@FR0ST8YT3 @GOGcom Yes
Set on default branch now, everyone gets it. Please tell me if anything explodes.
@saturnspussy Can you say more specifically exactly what you're seeing? Game won't run at all?
@saturnspussy This sounds like a mod breaking the game, you could remove the mods and then build back up.
@blackmagemasher Looks like an error of some kind, thanks!

@andregabriotti wait... 3 times in a row?
@DavidLeBanal That sounds like a problem for sure. Is there any other special thing you did that could reproduce the issue?
@sweptvevo People should stop harassing @sweptvevo about this. We've talked more (in private) and there was just a temporary disconnect in expectations and perceptions. Let's not make this a recreational Twitter anger thing please.
@gmorellp We looked at a bug like this and it appeared to be mod-related, we couldn't replicate it on vanilla. Are you running any mods?
@gmorellp Discussion here: https://ludeon.com/forums/index.php?topic=50478.0
@Brage01086506 It's not related to the expansion, power claw was always in vanilla. And they were rebalanced quite deeply.
@As3r_g There will be more than maintenance updates. We updated translations today. It's kind of on a per-need basis.
@Burtsbees92 Al wanted to separate them so it's a separate product https://store.steampowered.com/app/1244270/RimWorld__Royalty_Soundtrack/
@kilmarnok1285 We should work on this. Will address it in an update.
@asdte No mod, it's part of the game
@nikclarx Added in yesterday's hotfix, removed in today's. We're moving... quickly, shall we say.
@BourassaArt Welcome to the woods, it's awesome out here :) But seriously, it's unnecessary for an indie dev to go to any conference. Game development is a craft not a social club. And if you do need to contact someone - everyone involved has email!
@rene0263 It would be easy for us to set up, but that kind of control of NPCs can be exploitable or uninteresting; the fight to the shuttle is supposed to be part of the quest. That said we are making improvements to how the shuttle selects landing spots.
@DavidLeBanal I believe they are part of nearby ancient structures, but we should fix this.
@Ronan_M Huh, that's a new situation! Will have to look at it. Thanks. It's hard to say what should happen here exactly.

RimWorld 1.1 hotfix #3 has been released to the default Steam branch. Please tell me if anything catches fire that shouldn't! https://steamcommunity.com/gid/103582791454681671/announcements/detail/1705113791252789875
@SuweyStreams Sounds like a glitch, or she actually died during the quest (illness? bleeding?). IF you have a save from before the quest end could you send it to me?
@SuweyStreams lol you sent a sick old man to dance for a king? Yeah, he died. But the code should handle that better.
Reverted after some crashes on startup reported. I'm looking for any help with this one. If anyone has a crash on the unstable branch, please let me know, I'd love to see your modlist or log file.
I got 4 crash reports (thank you!) and they were all mod related; I'm suspecting there's some coincidental mod incompatibility and the hotfix actually didn't cause a problem. Still checking, may need to wait a bit for mods to settle.
@ShowMeTheTroof Hey did you go to http://rimworldgame.com/creative? First, I'd try again to see if it's fixed. If not, please email support at [email protected], Michael will get you what's yours for sure. Sorry for the trouble.
@neceros Turn off fog, you can see everything.
@FG_squared love the stream :)
@sadnaifu This user hit it: https://twitter.com/D_E_W_A_/status/1233780300741672960
@DundunNorway You can make a harp at the crafting spot or a smithy.
@DundunNorway Not your fault; I'm looking at ways to make it clearer. Enjoy!
@TheTopHatViking Already did!
@christiangruber You are extremely welcome!
@neceros Huh, good to know! Hmm
@Shubertg Hey can you read the edit from the linked Steam event and tell me if that sheds some light? Mod craziness recently. If you're using Replace Stuff mod try disabling that first.
@yaugieLC will fix!
@CarlosVanVegas You can backup your mod files directly from the steam workshop folder. Copy and paste the mod folders into the Mods folder inside the RimWorld install directory.
@rojomojogogo The info is out of date but the logos are still fine: https://ludeon.com/press/
@DavidLeBanal Can you email your savegame to me please? [email protected] Thanks
@Daska_Saguez Yeah, psychically deaf pawns can't use psychic powers - or be affected by them. I thought we put a warning in about this, though. Will need to check.
@keywrath Nothing changed on that front.
I just posted an article about where Ludeon is going next - What's next for RimWorld. Ludeon blog post: https://ludeon.com/blog/2020/03/whats-next-for-rimworld/ Steam event post: https://steamcommunity.com/gid/103582791454681671/announcements/detail/1705113791259047489
@hmmtodayiwlll @SuweyStreams It's a good point, thanks for telling me!
@himynameisyuri If you own it you can turn the whole thing on or off. You can also opt out of royal favor quests specifically if you don't want to do royal progression.
@XMakss Going to look at this, thanks.
@JacobG324 Funny we had something like this during testing but I cut it, still think the general concept has potential though
@keywrath Going to look into this.
@DavidLeBanal Got it, thanks. We're gonna look at it within a day or two.
Just pushed a very small hotfix to RimWorld that fixes an issue that caused mech clusters to not start dormant sometimes. Version is 1.1.2561.
@NickLanng Should be impossible, let me look at it.
@NickLanng Ohhhh, it's the mod.
@Sinvicta Wow, never seen that before. It's not drawing some of the ground sections. For an issue like that I'd look for some sort of 3D rendering issue. Could be fixed by changing video drivers, possibly.
@Sinvicta @nvidia No gameplay change will affect these; the game is ignoring the whole ground section, it really looks like a rendering bug of some kind. Completely novel. Let me know how it goes.
Just pushed an update to RimWorld's legacy version-1.0 branch. It will now ignore mod metadata that it doesn't recognize (i.e. metadata specific to later versions), so no more spurious errors.
@82Robsmith Thanks, done
RimWorld 1.1.2562 is up on the Steam unstable branch! Let me know if anything breaks, thanks. https://steamcommunity.com/games/294100/partnerevents/preview/1705113791262304175
@quill18 I can get behind this for several reasons.
@RimWorldFan Not buildable. But I thought about letting nobles call one as a royal perquisite.
@bug_powder Not decided I'm afraid.
RimWorld is now available for purchase on @GOGcom ! Base game: https://www.gog.com/game/rimworld Royalty expansion: https://www.gog.com/game/rimworld_royalty
@FG_squared Yes, it's a known issue we're working on. Thanks.
@Sinvicta @nvidia If you email me the save I can definitely look at it! Email at the bottom of https://ludeon.com/blog/faq/
@Yesersir Gonna look at this thanks
@andyhall89 Single threaded actually; we were able to optimize it to hit perf target without the complexity of multithreading.
@nikow I'm looking at designs for this
@nikow Sounds brutal. I'm considering adding some mood boost to quest helpers, but this kind of thing will always be possible.
@cj_vandenberg Need to look at this thanks.
@cterjesen Yep, there's a new build coming that will address this.
@ShowMeTheTroof Stencil buffer actually. Known issue.
@Major_Dodo During certain patches.
@wezo_ @GOGcom No.
@ferd_salvadore Yeah, there are some stats that fight themselves unfortunately. It should be advantageous overall, but I'd like to see if we can clean this up as well.
@Burtsbees92 It's intended right now.
@ShortValkyrie It's new in 1.1!
@Kamil29714795 Surprising. Will look at it thanks.
A RimWorld public unstable build is out, looking for any feedback about its stability before setting it live! Announcement: https://steamcommunity.com/gid/103582791454681671/announcements/detail/1706240323213708005 Discord channel to discuss this: https://discord.gg/FYBsdNX
@Kylorama It's in the colonist bar at the top of the screen (see their faction icon) and in their bio tab and inspect pane.
@keywrath I was wrong, it was related to another bug fix. We're going to adjust this.
@Darth_Trethon @GOGcom It's been sold DRM-free since 2013 :) http://rimworldgame.com
@hmmtodayiwlll So the body disintegrated to nothing while they were carrying it?
@KerlDer It's a bug, thanks :)
@DavidLeBanal Will check thanks
@DreadPirateRedx Fixed now!
@CaptainLurker interesting issue. This wouldn't be new though, just very rare
@yaugieLC I'm sorry about this, there was a bug (now fixed) that made him spawn with tatterered apparel after a long game. You can ram some drugs down his throat as soon as he arrives to help with this though.
@direGoldfish Also works for other goals like weight loss. I believe there's research showing that telling people about a goal makes one less likely to achieve it.
@neceros Add a cost to your terrain. It's weird, we're gonna look at it.
@XMakss Yes, they should.
@BlindFox455 There's no way to get rid of titles now aside from dying, letting someone else inherit it, and then being resurrected. The content patch will probably include a way to renounce titles.
@DutchTuchd Thanks, but it is intending to say perquisite https://www.dictionary.com/browse/perquisite?s=t "something demanded or due as a particular privilege: homage that was once the perquisite of royalty."
@Podarge_QotH Right :)
@CorentinLieute1 Yes, it's normal
@apokost I suggest buying on http://rimworldgame.com and then using http://rimworldgame.com/getmygame to instantly register on Steam. This way you have both versions, and we get more money!
@Aeghrond1 @apokost If you send it as a gift to a friend, it's as though they bought it themselves basically. They get an email with their DRM-free download link, and they can use http://rimworldgame.com/getmygame to register to their Steam. Thanks!
@M_Helios77 @apokost Please email [email protected]
@SilentSiren91 @Podarge_QotH Water doesn't freeze in RimWorld
@nigor If you follow these steps it'll work: https://support.apple.com/en-gb/guide/mac-help/mh40616/mac
@Aeghrond1 @apokost There is no key; just a URL and updates sent to the email. And thanks :)
@GameOnGardner I always thought the game Clive Barker's Undying was terribly underrated.
@Salzstange3000 It's not so much about the AI screwing up but the game mechanics falling apart. E.g. your guys will starve before they can haul items from one end to the other. The game is designed for a certain map size; bigger is not better same as chess.
@IADaveMark No, it's just because stores stock less TP relative to individual consumption rates than they do food. Because TP is physically large compared to its price, and because there's not much variety between TP types (compared to food types).
@amedeo_pezzoli It's an issue you're looking at. Would you be willing to send me a savegame where the problem happened? If so please send it to [email protected], and many thanks.
This one washes hands properly - bravo! (That, or RimWorld is more brutal than I realized...) https://twitter.com/Valkyen/status/1239606816062963716

@ShamsJorjani I love TNG but the obvious counterpoint: it's easy to be a saint in paradise https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ncWh6JluusQ
@cyuyangchunyu The game files are corrupted. 0. Turn off all mods. 1. Use Steam's 'verify game files' tool. 2. Manually delete the game files and reinstall using Steam.
@ShamsJorjani And congrats on federations! Seems to be doing great.
@Scrubje_ Turning off specific factions isn't supported in the vanilla game I'm afraid.
Forget re-reviews, I'd love to get a first review for RimWorld... Stellaris has 57 metacritic reviews; RimWorld has 8! https://twitter.com/ShamsJorjani/status/1240750958977712129
@RyanSumo @academia_game Well... RimWorld has beaches...

@diegoloretti No, they should all be compatible.
@CohhCarnage @AdmiralBahroo Proud :)
Turns out this update does have an incompatibility with the ModSwitch mod, sorry about that. See the post for full info.
@jdlaroche @quill18 Did it ever do that before? It really shouldn't.
@TrippySpaceBun No plans I know of, you could ask @AlistairLindsay
@SpectreLavender You can use one legally if you have a royal title that allows it (knight+ if I recall correctly). Perhaps we should clarify or adjust it though.
@moonscript @itchio You could do a thing where it costs 50 cents, but user is required to buy several games together costing a minimum of $3 (or just choose to pay $3 for the one game).
@nytimes recommended RimWorld as a quarantine game. That's pretty cool. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/01/arts/gaming-introduction-basics-quarantine-coronavirus.html
@GroggyLuck I always liked working on RimWorld :) And there are clear opportunities for improvement.
.@nytimes recommended RimWorld as a quarantine game. That's pretty cool. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/01/arts/gaming-introduction-basics-quarantine-coronavirus.html
@bartwerf No, I'd say "Don't compete directly with AAA. Do something they're not trying to do or are structurally unable to do."
@AdmiralBahroo Congrats! It's been fun watching. I'm almost sad I didn't make the game a little more absurdistly punishing to keep you there longer :)

@altay_bey1914 replied on forum :)
@PhoenixC64 I have no idea TBH, nothing like this has ever been reported and it's not what we see on other machines. Perhaps there is an error message in the Player.log you can see.
@StarmancerGame Done!
@SilkyKoko Is there a solar flare on at the same time by coincidence?
@As3r_g I'm afraid the answer is bigger than a tweet. But RW really isn't super optimized, just optimized enough to fulfil its purpose. I appreciate the props either way though.
The key to good game AI is designing the game so the AI doesn't need to be very smart.
@workshopcraft I rejected many, MANY enticing designs for RW because they would require to much AI intelligence. Ever notice how there aren't any activities in the whole game that would require two colonists to work together?
@TacoSt0rm @workshopcraft You're right! It's a 'gathering', which is a special thing that overrides other behaviors. Parties also do this. But it's so disruptive that it's not something they can initiate regularly or it would really throw off the schedules.
Someone please make this: A game where you look at pictures of food and try to guess the calories/macros. Then it tells you how you did so you can learn. (It would be a useful life skill to be really good at this.)
@pwtenny You'd have to make them all yourself to be accurate.
@JasonHornbuckle Yes but meals are different after they're prepared.
@RobPortMaine Perhaps you can't tell the difference now, but with some practice I think you could.
@GeminiJ13 @As3r_g We've made major efforts on optimization over the years, on a regular basis, and seen huge improvements. But it could have been even more. Optimization is not a yes/no thing; it's a very very wide spectrum.
@Thalyd There could be a bug, what are you seeing which seems wrong? Specifically.
@Thalyd Thanks! This will help us investigate the issue.
@sccotch_noch Of course, but those would be completely different games
@myfharad I appreciate it :) Nothing's announced for future plans! DLC or not we will make something though; I'm not retiring.
@mrfavus Yes
@ESREDM Are you on Steam unstable branch?
@cKcDillpickle Have fun! And nice screenshot, that one is from 2013 - completely ancient!
@TheRealJayrizzo @LudeonStudios My last reddit posts were a few hours ago and directly interacted with balance feedback (as you can verify). Why are you so angry? Is it really necessary to vent anger at me? Why not just give your thoughts like you're talking to a human being?
@SpectreLavender I consistently get reports from players essentially complaining that the game is too hard while simultaneously playing on the hardest difficulty and refusing to reduce it. Don't know how to solve this. Difficulty is not something I've really mastered, I think.
@Jethr0Paladin There's no need for aggression or anger venting. I'm a human being. I'm not here for you to abuse to make yourself feel better. Leaving that aside, I recommend you delete and reinstall the game since yours is the only report of this I've seen.
RT @quill18: Netflix is apparently now working on even more daring series, inspired by Rimworld. I'll let you guess the title. https://t.co…
@SpectreLavender Usually I avoid this sort of thing because it is putting design burden on the player, but I should probably explore it again. There are comparable games (Stellaris etc) with very fine-grained sliders like this.
@TheRealJayrizzo @LudeonStudios -Insulting my work directly -ALL CAPS exclamations -Accusations of 'shoving' things 'down our throat' Normal, respectful human communication does not include insults, pseudo-shouting or unnecessary accusations of wrongdoing.
@XMakss You have a choice. If you don't like them, banish them.
@XMakss They're refugees, not job applicants. They put themselves under your control, in the hopes you won't kill or banish them. I suppose we could add a 'kill' and 'banish' dialog but it would interrupt players and seem kind of redundant IMO. Good idea as well.
@Magzilla07 happy to hear it!
@OddsCrazyStuff @XMakss It's not a random mood penalty, it's the penalty incurred by choosing to banish someone who is looking to you for help. Just as in real life, you can't simply pretend refugees don't exist, and they won't happily agree to go away. Why would you expect them to?
@IADaveMark Tiny helper classes definitely go in a file with their parent. Each file has a cost to manage.
@PouiEE903357 Thanks, it's fixed now

@rpshiel I have to be honest - I've never heard of Curse of Enchantia before! What makes you think I did?
@ToadieYPQ Very cool, what game is that? How did you get a cartoon of RW's title screen in there? I need context!

@TheAdmiralOwl Thanks yeah, I was informed this morning. Sorry about that.
@Dweezil_Babua Plasteel is also harder to get recently with some other changes; it's more about specializing the material.

@GreyAlien But if _quadMesh is null it doesn't return anything... does it? Do assignment expressions return the final value and I never knew it? Probably dark magic I shouldn't be using anyway.
@kroizs Any save from 2017 or later, roughly, should still load (unless it was modded, then all bets are off).
@rzubek @GreyAlien Makes sense, and yeah I never use idioms like that which is why I wouldn't know. Too clever by half IMO.
@SnakeTrep Yep, we're testing a bunch of refinements to improve this, including choices between different rewards and refined quests all around. Look for that release soon. Or you can test it on the unstable Steam branch if you like.
Complexity isn't inherently bad in game design. The things you actually want to reduce are player cognitive effort and learning barriers. Simplicity is one way to avoid these problems, but it's not the only one. Love simplicity but don't fear complexity.
The next RimWorld content update is up for public testing on the Steam unstable branch. -Quest reward choices -New psyfocus and meditation system -Anima trees for tribal psycasters -New psycasts -Tons more stuff Come give us feedback here! https://discord.gg/FYBsdNX

@fassinao Given how psylink works now, it didn't really make sense any more. Plus it trivialized a ton of the game to steal 6 psylinks from one guy. I've got thoughts on how to bring this back though e.g. A weird device that gives you a psylink by consuming someone who has one.
