“I walked across the sands and saw the ruins of time. The forgotten four were there, but now they hide from the serpent. The Abyss left a scar and she was consumed, but he hid in his prison of ice. Vardorvis wanted blood, but he was strangled instead. Now at Lassar, only whispers remain. Divided but united, their essence is delighted. With all four, you will open the door. Will he find his vessel?”
- Lethe Napier Flem (A Chaos Elemental)
This mysterious message from Postbag from the Hedge is heavily hinting at a sequel for Desert Treasure. I believe that this message decoded gives some insight into a new Quest which heavily hints at the aforementioned Sequel. In this post, I will break it down to outline my theories however I will note, I do not have the whole picture and just a possible gist of what the quest might be; everything I say here could be wrong. With that, let me waste no more time in decoding it:
“I walked across the sands and saw the ruins of time.”
- This seems to clearly reference Azzanadra and his journey from the Pyramid where he was imprisoned and learning that the Zarosian Empire had both fallen and been erased. We follow with what likely will be the objective of the quest, a fetch quest where you seek four things for Azzanadra:
“The forgotten four were there, but now they hide from the serpent.”
- The forgotten four are likely the key items or NPCs that you will be gathering for Azzanadra. I am not sure what “the serpent” refers to exactly as there are two possible candidates for who that is: Sliske or Guthix/Juna. The former is much easier to interrupt here considering Sliske’s involvement in being the lone Mahjarrat fighting the good fight. This means that the items you seek are likely being hidden such that even the likes of Sliske is unable to retrieve them himself. This of course assumes that Sliske and Azzanadra have the same goal. Interrupting it as Guthix/Juna means that this whole situation has something to with the Ethics of Guthix. This leads more credence to you looking for people instead as it feeds into the idea that the gathering remnants of Zaros’ Generals is considered a possible violation of the Ethics.
“The Abyss left a scar and she was consumed, but he hid in his prison of ice.”
- This clearly refers to two different beings/objects and also lends more credit to individuals than objects although I still believe that it is more likely to be objects as identifying the beings is much harder to narrow down than just some abstract object you need to find for Azzanadra. However it is possible that the she refers to Char and the person hiding in his prison of ice as being Jhallan. "The Abyss left a scar and she was consumed" likely refers to some kind of Chthonian Demon consuming the thing you require for Azzanadra which also references a scar which could likely have something to do with Tolna from A Soul's Bane or the hole in the Desert Plateau. The Prison of Ice if not a reference directly to Jhallan freezing himself in ice, would be a reference to Ghorrock which you must break into to retrieve what Azzanadra requires.
"Vardorvis wanted blood, but he was strangled instead."
- This is one of the few names we get that directly reference things in OSRS. Vardorvis, for those who may not know, was a supposedly Zarosian Executioner who was hunting Yonrith Lovakengj, who founded Lovakengi, during the Third Age. I expect to find out that Vardorvis is actually a Vampyre due to the desire for blood as well as the fact that Vardorvis survived the Second Age and live into the Third Age. Personally I can see him as a Ghrazi due to their natural blood lust and strength in combat. Also if he was a Vampyre not sure the strangulation is enough to kill a him, however I am not sure what the context is behind "he was strangled instead" (Maybe a Boss Fight with some kind of Crawling Hands?) although it likely has to do with Yonrith Lovakengi who he was hunting. Similarly it ties into the next line which is:
"Now at Lassar, only whispers remain."
- Lassar is Ice Wolf Mountain which once had a fortress that was part of the Zarosian Empire. Camdozaal was built on top of the ruins of Lassar and currently a bottomless pit exists within Camdozaal which whispers which leads me to believe that it will be one of the key locations you visit regarding the goals of Azzanadra. Similarly it ties into Yonrith who lead the fall of Lassar which lead to the creation of Camdozaal. However assuming that this verse ties into the one before it, we would be missing a key element or fourth objection for the Player.
"Divided but united, their essence is delighted."
- "Divided but united" suggests that if the things you are looking for are people that they have the same alignment as Azzanadra and the opposite alignment of the "serpent" mentioned before. However "their essence is delighted" can be seen as support for the objection being objects instead of people if this line is referring to the need to bring them together if we assume delighted means inactive although a more substantial reading would say that their essence is the Zarosian Philosophy as well as believe in Zaros and that bringing them together in order to return Zaros, gives them joy. The idea that this quest serves to further the return of Zaros is supported by the following:
“With all four, you will open the door. Will he find his vessel?”
- These verses contain the most information about your objection which is to collect four things to open a door to help someone find a "vessel". The he likely refers to Azzanadra but the his likely refers to Zaros and the use of some vessel to bring Zaros back.
From this analysis I believe that the sequel will also be a fetch quest where you likely gather 4 individuals who have stakes in the Return of Zaros and will help you open a gate to find a vessel suitable for Zaros. This will include going to the Ruins of Camdozaal to investigate the whispers from the bottomless pit, something to do with the Abyss likely connected to Tolna's Rift from A Soul's Bane, and going to Ghorrock or somewhere in the surrounding area and freeing a prisoner. This is my guess as to what the Chaos Elemental is referring to however, as only one person, I want to hear what the community has to say about this theory especially regarding any details I might have overlooked or not thought about so please let me know what you think about this possible theory.
