It's fine balancing act when it comes to deciding how much stuff we want to show.
Obviously the Adventure mode is heavily exploration based, so we have to be careful not to show too much!
and when it comes to indev stuff like combat and PvP - it's quite hard to show since not all of our audience is understanding of gamedev processes. It can lead to overanalysis on non final things. We have super high standards for pvp (we come from a PVP server on Minecraft :P )

So for Hytale we're trying to make the game have quite a bit of variety in tone etc. Some of that might feature some spooky / creepy / unsettling content. (Still PG-13 Appropiate, no gore etc)

Hey guys. Just wanted to let you all know you are very much heard on the topic of us not keeping our word on the hytale blog post every few weeks. That's our bad. I apologize unreservedly on behalf of the team.
We have good reasons but we haven't been fairly transparent. (cont)
We put a huge amount of work and thoughtfulness into the posts because we know how much they mean to you. Even to the extent that we have one full time role dedicated to that.
Sometimes we are waiting for features to be integrated, in order to preview the content.
For example why preview X when X is about to update. We are in a tricky spot with a lot of major changes features waiting for integrations but that doesn't excuse that we should do better and have had backup plans.
This combined with a few other factors I can't talk about yet
Has made it tricky. My only request in this apology is that you not take our silence as a status indicator for the project as a whole. The team is still working diligently every day and progress is really encouraging. I'm very proud of them and excited daily.
Obviously we know you have questions that need answers and you deserve to have them. We've been at fault for being overly cautious in our communication. It's been a tough learning experience for us ever since unveil. I think we are in our own heads too much (cont)
Sometimes saying that you can saying nothing because of xyz. Is better than actually saying nothing... If you will pardon the confusing example. I think you get what I mean.
You all mean so much to us. When I make presentations about hytale the longest section is the community.
I never for a moment dreamed to be working on a project that has inspired people so much that they would spend their free time making Fanart. Honestly it can be a daunting responsibility but I'm so thankful and I wouldnt trade it for the world. (cont)

In a perfect world we would have got it out in 2019, but it would have been rushed and not what the community expected or deserved.
On a personal note re: Release date. This was very difficult information for the team to break
We fully expected to be able to ship something in 2019, but it wasn't to be - part of waiting so long to relay that information was us doing what we could to make 2019 happen.
Rather than put the team face first with the barrel of a 2020 promise we've decided that we're much more comfortable to say our expectation is 2021. Hytale is a 5-10+ year project that doesn't end with the release of the game. It's a marathon not a sprint.
We've said throughout it will be ready when its ready - and we do mean that - our ultimate goal of the project is that it's not just for us. It's for players and content creators to create what flights of fancy they can conjure up - and that takes time.
Our origin story is that of a minecraft server but we're evolving fast. For context on scope we've built everything in the project from the ground up. The engine - rendering, 3D modelling tools, the UI tech. Going down the unity / unreal engine route for a block based game just
wasn't feasible for us. There have been many attempts to make blockgames in those engines, and I think trying to fit a square peg in a round hole (forgive the pun) just isn't something that results in the 'comfy feel' that block games NEED to have. So we chose the harder route.
Anyway - I'm incredibly sorry to those who are disappointed by it taking longer than they hoped. I fully expect those people to exist and be assured your voices are being heard. It's you who we are making this for, we are doing our best and I do hope on the day when the game
is loading on your computer for the first time you will forgive us for the wait. As Shigeru Miyamoto says “A delayed game is eventually good, a bad game is bad forever.”
And to those who are bombarding us with messages of support. Your voices are heard too, they are what carry us through development. To be in this position and for a pre launch game from a first time studio to have this support.... I'm a little teary eyed reading them. Thank you.

@IanMcCabe_1 While those are indeed good ways to make games look better, they are also in our eyes a slippery slope to making the game less accessible for creators. The goal is to have the game have as low a barrier as entry as reasonable to allow assets to be custom made.
@IanMcCabe_1 If we were to include specular maps, normals maps etc etc it would mean a pretty big overhead in terms of both work of creating those and then also making the asset be visually compatible / believable with the rest of the base game look.
HOWEVER....
@IanMcCabe_1 Do bear in mind that there will be a suite of baseline rendering effects, and things like the VFX can already do things like bloom, burn etc etc.
(We have no current intention of opening the ability of creating your own rendering effects such as shaders)
@IanMcCabe_1 Also I suck at making proper reply threads on twitter. This one got split in two -_-
@IanMcCabe_1 Anyway, TLDR - No current plans for additional texture maps, there are graphical effects still being worked on by rendering team but those are being made with simplicity of asset creation as a priority.
@IanMcCabe_1 Then we will have to agree to disagree on that one. Not everything is possible and we have to make decisions on what has to be prioritized :(.

Video calls are not real things. People do not behave like normal people when cameras are focused on them. The worst type of call is one of those constant google hangout type things. Its voyeuristic and weird.

Hytales production still continues, we are a remote company already so we will be much more resilient to this than the average company. That being said there are still minor disruptions due to external circumstances like caring for family and having to battle for TP

Had an interesting few weeks in my personal life.
I was making daily graphs about COVID-19 in my local area to help my family understand the virus. One day @NinjaPotts asked me to make the graph shareable.
and well, it kinda blew up since... Gets hundreds of shares a day now.
Anyway the reason why I've shared this with ya'll on twitter is that some noticed I was quieter than normal
I hope you'll forgive I prioritized this over the usual twitter interactions.
Anyway they seem to mean a lot to people, so I've been making them every day now for 3+ weeks. I'm not a doctor or epidemiologist though so I was really worried at first. Despite my twitter persona I like to keep my personal life super private. I've accepted this is a 'thing' http://pbs.twimg.com/media/EVjDHCrXkAEjHZJ.png
I guess what I'm doing is providing a more locally focused context in greater detail than what say the UK wide press provides, and I'm doing it in a way that I think highlights the fortunate position we've found ourselves in and that we have to continue to keep working hard on.
Beyond impacting twitter interactions I was doing, It hasn't affected the work on the actual project itself which I'm sure will be a question many of you will have.
I've since streamlined it and it only takes me 30 minutes a day now to produce the local update.

So anyway yeah, That's the long story over. Now that I've streamlined the stuff I'm doing on facebook it should no longer be taking up quite the same level of time that it was, and I can get back to shitposting on twitter :).

@PhyreCreations Hmm if I have to describe it, its trying to make it visually behave like the top end minecraft community animation stuff does.
For example bending the joints in that way or trying to make the faces work the same. Just doesn't really work.

and while they have not been without their challenges and missteps (which we asked many questions of). I don't think we can ask for a better & more knowledgeable partner that understands what it means to deliver for the players. We aim to learn from both mistakes and successes.
I'm stoked that we are now receiving support from Riot games that will enable us to continue to raise the bar on what we want to deliver to the Hytale & Hypixel community.
This has been a long process (over 3 years!) of getting to know them in many aspects.
Riot is allowing us to do our thing, we continue to work in our unusual and unorthodox ways.
None of that was sacrificed, it's the key part of our partnership
This is but the next chapter in the dream that we have always had - to go from a mod team into a fully fledged studio.
Finally, thanks to our community. Hypixel & Hytale will hopefully follow a trend of great games that sprouted from community roots. The community is our battery that the devs draw from. We will continue to give it our all & create something worthy of your continued support.

The status icons for hunger effects don't appear when someone is full.

Will see about making the status icon toggle-able - no promises.
Humans have a tenancy to align their eyes with the horizon. In Games the horizon is much closer than in real life
This means you tend to walk around with your head tilted d own in video games.
In Hytale we manually readjust the head to be about 5 or so degrees up to solve this
Its adjusted from the 3rd parties perspective :P.

I grew up in Northern Ireland during the tail end of the troubles. It's not entirely relatable of course but there's a couple of parallels here and there.
We had to dismantle our police force and reform it before we could begin healing - 20 years later it still ain't fixed.
but it did get better - a lot better. It took an awful lot to get there.
I hope things in America are closer to the end goal than the beginning, with all the fog it's hard to know. Just thinking of you all from over here in Northern Ireland.
